Title: Cutting Tenons
Post by: The WoodButcher on April 06, 2008, 02:26:36 PM
Hi Everybody, I am cutting the tenons for my sign now. My mortise' are already in place, where do I measure from to get the right length to cut the brace? I'm sure this is a stupid question but if I don't ask, I won't ever know. Here is a pic of a tenon I made today, is this OK? It is, just a sign post but what about that knot in the tenon?

Most tenons are at least 2" thick and if I recall correctly they should be within a 1/4" of the bottom of the mortise and the pin centered on the tenon.

Dont quote me on that though as I am sure the tenon size will change based on the timber size.

WB, you are very precise in your sawing.  I would probably just use a chainsaw. ;D
