Title: Another big Pole job landed in my yard!
Post by: Kirk Allen on December 22, 2018, 11:55:45 AM
Got a call regarding going halves on some Western Red Cedar and Douglas Fir power poles.  First delivery was a few days ago.  Large trailer load and lowboy load of them now on site!

Sooner or later I am going to have to BUILD something.  LOTS of good wood getting stockpiled!

What are you doing with them?

A few years ago, I sliced a pole up and made it into 3xs for a conference table....looked beautiful except.....when the wood warmed to room temp, then the smell of creosote would water eyes....no way to kill it I have been told.

The poles that are not treated will be used for building my shop etc.  The poles with treatment will be outside used for numerous projects to include rebuilding the old chicken barn where most of my lumber is stored.

You are correct, the smell of creasote never goes away and will run out of any room made from wood with it.  I have a friend nearby that build a small cabin for his poker games.  All from creasote poles  He is proud of it and it looks nice but I could not last 1 minute inside it on a summer day.

Looks like them poles are in real good shape yet!  I can't believe how flat it is out there.  Must make it much nicer to set up and stack, etc.

OK, I officially have my work cut out for me!  They brought out the last load of poles today and let's just say, I have a pile of poles for Christmas!

How do you handle the "poison pills" they sink into the lower part of the poles?

Do you mean the aluminum tubes with bug juice?  They have never been a problem, other than you have a hole in the lumber.

There are only a few bottoms in this set of poles.

Didn't know what was in the holes, just knew it was bug or fungus protection with kind of a cork thingy to keep them covered/sealed.  I'd think they what ever was there would be hazardous waste and not good to breath.

FINALLY got caught up and got all the poles cut, along with a few other jobs along the way. I hope to get the pics up next week.
