Interesting event.
The mill that I contract saw at has the first parts of a new MD sitting under cover at the mill site.
The story is that a customer from the Portland area (80 miles away, has a bunch of Colombia River Boom logs that he's had the mill sawing to make flooring out of and this saw is to cut those logs. Toothed blade because of the grit. Looks like three foot end stands and the cross feed track have arrived. No trailer and four dog sets. Some of those boom logs are 36' long.
Why so many dogs I have no idea!
Maybe I'm out of a job?
No mention as to who is going to run the saw. (Maybe I have a job? Do I want a job?)
I'd think that MD will show up and do some training and show and tell.
I'll post as I know more.

Is that the Maple mill in Lyons?

Pictures Please :)

Hardwood Components, on the north side of the hwy as you near Lyons (Mahama). Mostly cuts oak now. I've been cutting a bunch of 5 foot 4" x 6" for him.
Correction on the dogs, there's 6 or 8 of them.
The mill is not there yet. Just some pieces of frame work and the end stands.
I still don't know who, how, where it's going to run.

Any more news on the other parts arriving?

The mill was up and running today. Now has a total of 4 hrs on it (4pm today).
The young man running it has had the class given by MD for total experience sawing. The dogs are in paired sets, three sets of two about 18" apart per set. Three foot end stands. Max cut length is 16 feet. I'll try and get some pictures.
They set the mill up under the eave of the old green chain. I asked the mill site owner where my shady place was to saw!

Have you told
Dennis about our site?
-
Are they still going to have you saw?
-
If he is fortunate hge will run the MD mill.

The mill, where the MDis at, is mostly a hardwood mill, the fir thing is just an off shoot thing because of a past business contact of the mill owner. Lawyer court case thing.
The saw belongs to , "Columbia River (something)". They are trying to make things (flooring?) out of old river boom logs. It was purchased to saw the ends of the boom logs where holes were bored to chain the log together or where there is too much decay and split out to make the flooring. Most of those logs are 40 feet long with very little taper before they were cut to go through the head rig.
The sawyer is out of the Portland area and is an "artist".
Yesterday was just a trial for him to get used to the saw and see a little of what it can do. He cut a bench seat and some slabs. Lots of changes in the mill since I ran one 25 years ago.
I can't see the economics of it myself. Travel and lodging has got to be a killer. And he is relying on the mill for support equipment. I didn't even see a peevee. They can't be figuring on keeping the saw here to cut the logs they haul down. As a Beta test it makes sense to me.
So, am I going to still saw for the mill? I don't see a threat to that. Not really worried if I don't. Maybe I could get some of my own sawing done.
Me running the saw is possible (if I'm lucky?), but as far as I know that's just my thoughts. I've also thought it might be for sale in a year or so if somebody doesn't fugure out it would be better to take the saw to the logs. I'd need a trailer mount to fit my operation.
I did offer to answer any questions about sawing that I could. And the sawyer reported to the mill owner that seemed like a nice guy. I always thought so but it's nice to have confirmation.  I'll give the sawyer this web address to check out.
And no, I won't give Dennis this site address, he might find out too much of my secrets and besides he's not a webbie from talking to him.

It sounds as though you still have your work cut out for you.

Did Dennis ever get the MD mill operating at Lyons mill site?
-
The mill is just still sitting there. Haven't seen anybody use it or any sign anything has been done with it. Still nice and shiney

Is that mill still sitting there?

Not there. It just went somewhere.
