Thanks to our Governor Blago the state foresters do not have any budget money to even thing about documenting any champion trees.  I know from the measurments I gave them it will be the new state Champion but until he comes out it sits idle in the woods :(

The cut our state foresters down to 9 people for the whole state.  Ours has to cover 9 counties and there monthly budget doesnt even have enough in it for fuel to drive three of the counties :o

I could be mistaken, but I think our service foresters have been cut to 6 for the whole state.

I know....topic resurrection.

How big is this tree you know of?
Took a photo of a 6' diameter Hackberry this Sunday.  Morrilton, Arkansas....near the big river.  There are three of them, all about the same size near a long ago abandoned home.

Tried uploading them into a gallery, but they are still too big even after I whittled them down to 400x350....I don't get it?

This one is over 7 foot diameter.

Its not so much the dimension of the pic as it is the KB size.

Kirk, anyone in most states can nominate a tree.  Many of the 'Big trees' in Oregon have been nominated by a retired dentist and others.

Go to the Illinois site and follow the directions for measurements and scoring.

The challenge has been getting the State Forester to come out and confirm what was submittted.  They slashed the D&R budget so bad that this type of work is last on the list :(

They would probably laugh at you, if you asked them to do such a thing in this state.

Actually Frank,

March 2007

Oregon’s Big Tree Register

The Oregon Department of Forestry recently transferred responsibility for the Oregon Big Tree Register (the largest tree of each species in the state) to the National Center for Conservation Science & Policy in Ashland. Cindy Deacon Williams is the coordinator for the program, and she can be reached at 541-482-4459 ext 303, or by email at cindy@nccsp.org. Williams reports that the program is also recruiting volunteers across the state to help with nomination  verification.

Several Arborists out of Portland; Corvallis and Eugene are actively involved in verifying. e.g.; http://ascendingthegiants.com/expeditions.html

Do you suppose a redwood with a 12 foot foot print would count for anything?  It's not real tall but the butt is huge.

I would think anything that could make the tree a 'record' would count?  Be it the Bf, diameter, height, or a combination of all those things....

Steve, (possibly) I know of someone looking for: 16' log with 7' top diameter. Sequioa / Redwood. Provided he has not located one in southern Oregon or northern Cali.  Is this one a possible removal?

Sure was pretty down there looking out over the water. I know one thing  (They cant hide that money ) The people were real nice though. He gave me a $100.00 tip  ;D

Being close to Washingtons' house I just thought it might be a cherry tree, but oh that's right that one was chopped down and he didn't lie about it.

Thats Great!  Quite different than yesterdays job I did.  Nine logs and not a one over 12", most in the 8-10.  Managed to get just shy of 500 bf cut in two hours.

Total bill was $197.25  -  The guy pulls out 2 one hundred dollar bills and asked if I had $2.75 in change?

I did not have change.  I told him all I had was a $20.00 bill.

Are you sitting down?  He thens says, "well, can we call it even at $180?

I told him NO, the bill is what it is.  After 10 minutes of him looking for change he gave me the 2 bills and said "I guess this will have to work".

I was shocked all things considered.  He had a bad back and didnt touch a single board.  I ended up doing it but since it was a small job I wasnt to concerned.  I let his two kids run the mill on a few logs and they loved that but I got the impression Dad was not so happy about them touching ANYTHING. Oh, did I mention that neither kid touched a board?

I tried to get those kids involved but I think they were to interested in their text messages and computer gadgets.

I feel sorry for kids like that.  Its part of the problem that has led us to where we are today.

We got some tightwads over here to. Milled  748.2 bf for one guy last week Bucked the logs and stacked the lumber on his trailer for him  ( stack measured 748 bf ) Charged him 40.00 extra for my son Jack to off bare and stack the lumber. Anyway we finished the job with no one else around and left. E-mailed a total to him a few days later. $375.00  He emails back his calulations 525bf = 225.00  (HERE WE GO) ::) >:(

I thought it couldnt get worse.  Bit off more than I could chew this weekend.  I had looked at a log for a guy and told him we could cut it but it was going to cost extra because of its size, which was 52".

Long story short, spent three hours widdling only to find the 14 foot log had been infested with Ants about 8 feet up, thus EVERY board had a one foot area at that 8 foot mark that was destroyed.   Couple that with the fact the guy refused to lift a finger to help, contrary to what we talked about and agreed upon, or so I thought, then at the end of the day what should have been $600 I get a check for $200 handed to me with the comment that he was not paying full price for lumber that was full of ants.  >:(

In short, I have his name and adress and will file a small claims case against him this week!  Some people are just umbelievable.  In all the years I have been cutting I run into 2 nut jobs in less than a week.  I had used written contracts when I was in the Suburbs but quit doing that when we moved back to the farm as the people were typically men of their word.  I guess I found two dirtbags that must have moved here from Chicago or St. Louis!
