Title: boiled burl
Post by: Stevem on September 16, 2010, 01:17:14 PM
Has anybody ever heard of boiling burls to reduce the tension in them so they dry better?

Even heard that they dry faster if you first boil them?

I've soaked burls in DNA for 24hrs, then put them in a brown paper bag for a week...moisture level dropped from 40+% to 11%.  I turned the piece right out of the bag, and it looked great.

Was told that the piece would need to be boiled for a really long time, and it would still require awhile for drying....so I didn't do it.

I know this is an old post, but no matter.  It might clear something up for the future.  What is DNA?  De Natured Alcohol is all I could come up with.
Thanks
