Kolher engines
« on: September 28, 2012, 01:27:35 AM »
My 27HP Kolher died. >:(

Seems it either ate the cam shaft or a cam shaft gear.  The valves are not moving when the crankshaft turns.  Took into the shop this evening to see what the damage is.  No real warning.  The engine just coasted to a stop (with two boards to cut to finish a lot)

Anybody ever hear of such a thing with a Kolher?  It' only got 600 hours on it.

Not a Kohler, but, I used to have an Onan that the valves would stick open. Had to pull the heads several times to clean the stems.

No noise as it quit or coasted down ??

Up date:

Cam gear and crank gear are toast.  Which means I have to buy a new crankshaft and camshaft.  Also messed up the governor gear.  More tear down to try and figure out "why". Lots of little metal teeth in the bottom of the crank case

Heads are coming off to check for cylinder damage.  Sigh :(

Still got the job to finish when I get back running.  Does this mean I have all the work I can saw?

That much problem might warrant a new or good used replacement. Very strange for those gears to tear up.

The engine was too old to get any response as to warranty.

Checking the web found that, though not common. Kohler had some problems with cam gears and that seems what happened to mine.  But when the cam gear goes and it takes out the pressed on crank gear.  Half of the teeth on the cam gear were gone and several on the crank.  with both of those gone the governor gear suffered fatal damage.  Trouble shooting showed that the valves were not moving at all.  I got the, "Gee these engines never do that!"  Now that makes me feel special!

Back running as of yesterday.  Re-installation pretty simple.  Took the opportunity while the engine was out to pressure wash the mill.  Now I've got a clean old mill.

Repair bill was about $850 and most of that was for parts.  $325 for just the crank.

Side note:  Offered to pay with either credit card or cash but if cash I'd want a 2% discount.  He took the cash!   ;)  At least the bank doesn't get a cut on my misfortune.  Makes me feel a little better!

So you think!  Now you posted that the government is going to come looking for their portion!   >:(
