Shrinkage and stability!

Vertical has less structural integrity and when the logs shrink you risk your walls shifting considerably.

Horizontal log structre the logs can shrink all they want and the only change, for the most part is the hieght of the structure.

Logs shrink more in diameter than in length, thus why most log structures are horizontal! 
Integrity is doing the right thing when no one is watching!
