Waiting around...photo!
« on: June 15, 2014, 06:22:03 AM »
While waiting for some customers to arrive, I decided to get a few 'chunks' milled down for processing later.  The time was just a tad too early to fire up the mill(to be read as the wife wasn't awake yet)....so I clamped everything down and was twittin' my thumbs.  I grabbed the Sony a350 and shot a few photo's.

This one is just some post-processing fun in PhotoMatix Essentials and a crop in Picsas3.

And the pieces that came from these chunks?  Easy, I make collages of the pieces I gather as 'sets' and photo top/bottom....makes it easier then uploading four different photo's on the website(tip, wink, wink).

And what do you use the milled pieces for? Nice looking set up, BTW.

They get processed into pen blanks...think 3/4"sq x 5-1/4" pieces for $1.95/ea(one board foot makes me $66)!!!!

Some of the larger chunks I mill get sold as wine bottle stopper blanks and even game call blanks....of course, those pieces go for a LOT more.  Typically, I mill, process, dry, and then sell this type of timber(I only use unique stuff from my locality)....

Small market....yup, but it makes me some change to use for other 'projects', and sometimes a vacation somewhere nice.  Would it pay the everyday bills?  Probably not, but then again...I already have a job.

What species?  Kinda looks like some persimmon I milled a while back.  Very nice!

Sorry I missed this...

This stuff is some mineral stained Southern Red Oak that also has some spalting.

So what exactly is the mineral that causes the spalt?

joasis,

They are two different characteristics. Mineral stains may or many not be present in the living tree.  Spalt is a step in the decay process.  Spalting has distinctive black, spiderweb-like lines, usually following the annual rings.  It is most noticeable in lighter woods like ash, cottonwood, maple, hackberry and white oak.  I think it occurs in all species.

Timing is critical in that the more spalting, the farther along the decay process.  You can still have solid wood with very fine spalting.  As the spalting gets more prominent the wood around it may be doughy or soft.  Solid wood, with spalting, will normally sell for several times more than a similar board without spalting.  It is very popular with turners too.

I dunno, could be whatever happens to be in the ground where the tree was?  I didn't sleep anywhere lately(think Holiday Inn Express)...

I agree with Tom.  Looks a lot more like spaulting than mineral streaks.  Very nice!

I think you might want to come and look at it before you use all that 'armchair diagnose' technology.....

I know spalting.
I know mineral staining.

You are both wrong to some extent.  The spalting is only in the sapwood.  The mineral staining is in the heartwood.

Looks nice.  I need to learn how to use Photo Essentials instead of just "Infraview" so as to do what you did.

Scott,
Hey, I wasn't analyzing the photos you posted, I was answering joasis's question about mineral stain 'causing' spalt.  With the species and age of the logs I mill, I see spalting pretty often - mineral stains not so much.  My point was that they were two, different, characteristics.  My comments had nothing to do with the photos you posted and certainly meant no disparagement.

I have some photos in my gallery that I need to dig up that came from the Cabot-Bebee Arkansas area.  Oak boards with the most amazing mineral stains I have ever seen.  The majority of what I cut down there had mineral stains.  Most of the logs came from pasture ground as well.  I believe there is a connection, just not sure what it is.
