Rainier Brewry/Wedding Pavilion.

The Rainier brewery was built in Seattle in 1884-1999 and several truck loads of beams ended up here locally.

A local Historic place known as the parrot house is building a 30x80 covered pavilion for weddings and other events using these beams.

Resawing 130 yr old Doug fir beams is hard on saws ::) Yesterday 4 of the 7 saws hit nails the other 3 saws got hot after loosing set due to shaving the patina off beams to keep the size.

A local black smith who has a COMPLETE Rail road round house set of black smith tools is doing all hand forged structural and decorative brackets for the beam.

They had another batch of beams denailed.
These were 7 1/2"x15 1/2 all over 20 and they wanted one 7 1/4x10 and a 4x10 out of each piece :-\ :-\ so they denailed enough beams to make the 4x10's ;D and I done some back shaving to keep the size and take the patina off.
On some of the beams I had to make plunge cuts to keep from repositioning the piece.
Here are some pictures of the process.

How are those beams cutting, looks like they would dull blades fast.   Steve

They are like cutting 130 year old Doug fir ;D

They cut at a good rate and are light easy to handle. The over length adds a good shove and some quick clean up cuts to the handling.

The sawdust turns to powder so not much makes it out the dust shoot. A damp rainy day will keep the dust settled but when the sun comes out the dust drifts.

Back shaving takes out the set and wears the sides off the teeth. However it works for cleaning off the patina and keeping the size, saw marks are a plus on this job.

It dose take a lot to grind that and the nail strikes out so I have been using 6-8 of my older saws per day and I buy half of them.

They had a batch of 9 1/2 x 9 1/2 they wanted 8x8 out of. Those cut fast, saved a paneling piece off all sides, next.
