age guessing trees
« on: January 20, 2016, 11:42:46 AM »
I went out and took a look at this redwood tree the other day that is being removed because it is damaging the sewer line, sidewalk and even the street.
Size is 60"-64" dbh and it don't get any smaller no mater how you look at it but it does have thick bark.

It would be interesting to core it but if they are going to remove it then that is even easier.  What are they going to do with it?  Any chance you can saw it?
They tree huggers won't let the industry log anymore but a redwood of that age has to be removed rather than work around it and deal with it.

Probably between 60 to 70 years especially since it's been sucking food from the sewer line.  Kind of like steroids in our climate.  1/2" growth rings on the outside.  Do you know if it was Sequoia or Coastal redwood?  Sequoia has a big but swell

Do they need it sawed/slabbed?

First guess got it ;D Owner planted it 65 years ago and called it a baby coastal redwood. They have three more on the lot.

Got conformation today that I will get to mill it mid February.
The tree service will bring in a crane, They have a permit to close off the busy street while they set the logs in the drive way, then open the road up get everything chipped and the stump ground on the 15-16. They will leave all of their signs and cones and we will set the mill mill on the side of the street with the loading arms in the driveway on the 17-18.
They have two projects to mill out of this tree, a deck and a gazebo, and would really like to get a slab or two for tables.
If you are up for making slabs out of the butt log ;) there is room for it to be set to the side and slabbed at the same time ;D

Might be able to do that!  60" limit on width but I have a chain saw to adjust.  Like the idea of working with/for you.
Where is it located and is it going to rain?

PM me

This tree was taken down on the 15 & 16 and milling was finished on the 20th
Steve brought his mill down and made four cuts on the 16' long but log. He made two real nice table slabs one 3" the other 6" the rest of the tree was milled into 2x6 for decking with along with a hand full each of 6x6 post and 2x12 planks.
got bumped last time I tried to do this post so will add photos separately.
Camera was dead the day Steve came down so no pictures of his mill.
Steve We found your roller when we moved the bottom part of the log, will bring it by next time we are up in your area ;)

Nice photos. Are those wide slabs using a Lucas and chainsaw bar ?  We built a long bar system for our Peterson, but, never got to try it out. Bar was too narrow so chain kept running off.

I was there and cut two 6" slabs for resaw and to get toward the center and then cut a 3" for for a table.  Tree service cut the butt log 16'

Took three of us to slide the 6" off the log.

And the weather was really grate.  It quit raining as we got done.

Enjoyed meeting Backwoods and seeing a band mill in action.  That roller I left was an old broom handle (with out the broom) I normally use old cyclone fence post but the smaller wood one was easier to get under the 6" slabs. They were heavy.  No real loss if I never see it again.

Just plant a tree over a sewer line and see what happens in 80 years!  lol
