Welcome to the forum.  Can't help you on this as I am not a WM kind of guy.  Give WM a call and see if they can help you.
Also look at Sawmill Trader http://www.sawmilltrader.com/and see what similar mills are going for.  (Link above works as well)

Welcome to the forum  ;)

What engine?, HP?
What year exactly? (yes it matters)
What clamp? (2-plane or flipper)
What color are the bandwheels - This will indicate shaft/bearing capacity (some were never upgraded)
Condition of top rail on frame?

As for price, there are ALOT of factors that come into play.  With the machine going on 30 yrs old, it should be scrutinized pretty close.  WM's "orange book" value is a place to start, but does not take into account everything.

I have literally looked at a couple older WM LT40's that "cut good" and I wouldn't have given $4000 for.  But, having the background and experience that I do, I knew what to look for.  One of those mills had a bend mail rail... good for nothing more than parts at that point.   :-\

My best advice is to find someone in your area that KNOWS what to look for and let them make an educated evaluation for you on the mill's condition and potential required maintenance.  Alot of gremlins can hide in a WM, especially one of that vintage.

Not trying to paint a gloomy picture, just being honest.  A person can quickly spend a couple grand in an older mill doing basic repairs.  Hopefully the one you're looking to purchase has been taken care of and well maintained.  Even then, it is still a machine that will undoubtedly have issues that will need addressed.

Hope this helps   ;)

I picked up a similar deal a couple of years ago, except it also came with an old belsaw edger, which I still have never went and hauled home yet, so you might say the same deal as you are looking at.
Mine was an 88, and asking price was 10 grand, might have been too much but I have enjoyed what little I have gotten to use it.

We wound up doing a trade deal, so out of pocket cash was considerable lower than the 10 grand though.

70 is getting hot even for summer.
In this area we need sustained below zero weather to do any logging, depending on where we are logging at.

We get over 100 occasionally in the summer here in South Carolina

Where are you located? And I take it , it needs to be cold to freeze the ground right?

furu - you're in Fairbanks AK?

I spend a few months in Anchorage 20 years ago.  My mother and stepfather had moved up to Wasilla to live for 20 years or so, so I figured I'd try my luck up there.  It was a no go and I ended up back here in several months.

I am in Fairbanks. lol
What was it that was no good about Los Anchorage? lol
And yes we need the ground frozen, not to mention creek and river crossings.
The sale we are working on this year does not have any actual water crossings, but there is always some swamp involved.
The ground is froze now, the problem is the snow is like lower 48 snow.

Back when I was starting out with my new bride (35ish years ago) Alaska still had homesteading going on, might still I don't know. But I almost had her talked into it, they would give you land if you would build a house on it and live in it... couple more drinks and I might have got her there.. Might have been neighbors..
Always kind of wish we had done it..

No sorry for the confusion.
A.O. asked  where Starmac was located and I said Fairbanks.
I should not have responded as I confused the matter.

This post is one of those that I almost pass by now days,, folks want and it seems folks want info on stuff that frankly they have already made their mind up on.. Sometimes I feel like as good as reading is on varying things, (my wife being a reading specialist) really!  early childhood stuff,  I do know from this and  my own experiences in trades, reading is good..I just have to say,,bottom line finances rule purchases, based on whats accumulated on studies,(and pitches) regarding mill purchases, with at time what seems almost no regards to on sight recon work,,?? I know I've witnessed a pile of mis cabbables,  if this is a word,  and let down expectations,,  this fellow clearly has no idea whats what, and is relying on info he believes to be factual.   Its sad, but it happens every day in the portable saw mill business,   just call the best service oriented company in the world, and wait for an answer,,

Yeah - 1 posters can get on my nerves, but maybe...just maybe...something bad happened to him in his life and the whole sawmill thing had to be postponed and this forum is the furthest from his mind right now.

Sometimes I'm not ornery enough to be able to think this way.  I try to be a nice guy.  But when you get a feller come on, ask a general question that causes an hour of typing to be done by members and never comes back...  :-X
