Baker was using blades that were tweaked by none other than our own member, Cutting Edge, aka Richard Thompson!  I'd like to say they were the Kasco blades he distributes but I honestly can't remember that for 100% certain.  It's in a post here someplace.  He was proud of the fact as he well should be.  He deserves to talk about his hand in Baker winning.

Great job Richard, if you find yourself coming thru NC close to me I might have to hire you for a lesson. My blades are doing better with the 250 but there is always room for improvement.

Good job, what kind of logs are those.  If I had logs like that I could saw more than 50 bf per hour.  Steve

lol I hear that loud and clear, Steve!  Made me chuckle a bit this morning with that one - thanks! lol

Thanks for putting the link to the shootout results up there, Cutting Edge.  It indeed WAS a Kasco Woodmaxx blade that won with your snake charms added to it.  What is that, some kinda magic smoke?  Got a bottle for sale?

After watching the video of the shootout and seeing Baker win by almost a full log over WM made me want a Baker but the price tags of those big machines are more than my mortgage when we bought this place pushing 20 years ago.  But just once I'd like to try one of them out.  But then I'd be worried I'd like it so much I'd hafta go get one somehow... choices choices choices...

Nice job Richard! Why don't the ones you sharpened for me cut that fast?   That's ok, customer Saturday brought 450 bf of Hickory logs and helped me saw them up. I used one Kasco 4 deg sharpened by Richard at Cutting Edge. Customer literally said "it's cutting like butter,"  so they might not be as fast (not sure why), but they sure are sharp and set properly!! Good riddance to WM resharp!! Thanks Richard for doing what you do!

An amazing performance in that video.  Richard's blades  and Richard himself are truly part of their success.  May have to look at some Kasco blades for my mill.

I'm betting you'll like them.  They're my favorites after trying 4 others.

Thats some impressive sawing, Hank is one heck of a sawyer, he hand set every set.
But I am pretty sure, pretty damn sure I could beat him.
I run that mills big brother for a living and I use the computer setworks and can say for sure he ain't as fast as the computer. If Baker reads this they could come down and see for themselves.

Nonetheless great job Hank and Richard and Clay.

these shootouts are a real embarrassment to the sawmill industry. to really show the true production of a portable mill it needs to include a site setup and needs to include a blade change in the shootout. the bf needs to reflect log scale versus bf tally. sorry for my rant but, i'm more interested in making money than what a 30 minute demo can provide.
how about sawing dirty frozen logs 8 hrs a day? oh wait that doesn't sell mills.

Never have been much into the shootout results either but really like the looks a build quality of a Baker mill, some other mills are cheapening them up and getting to heavy for their design as most have figured out by now.  Steve

You have a valid point in the "perfect" logs that they are sawing.  Nice-n-Juicy, clear, near perfect Poplar butt logs.  In all actuality, that is the only way it can be done and ensure a level playing field.

The Firewood Processor Shootout 3 years ago was a fine example of that, but not in a good way.  One competitor specifically had 3 HORRIBLE logs out of their  deck that absolutely gave them fits.  Compared to a couple others that had what some might consider saw logs.  Wasn't even close to fair.

Gonna be awful hard to find frozen logs in Oct. too.   ::)

...the bf needs to reflect log scale versus bf tally.

From what I understand, the final results takes that into account along with other factors of time, recovery vs. waste, mis-cuts, etc..  All the data is entered into a formula/algorithm and the "official" winner is declared from that data.

Baker actually stated their log scale and recovery/overrun at the end of the video.

Been to two of the shoot out, worked if you want to call it that for the Sawmill and Woodlot magazine. Great people to hang out with for a few days.  As to the mills, all the different mills, makes and models, I feel like I should state my humble opinion.  The shoot out is really not a real life situation like ROL mentioned, and it really is not competition per say, there really is only one winner, and that's the folks watching, watching how the mills run, getting some general ideas of off bearing techniques, as well as loading, turning, and sawing techniques.  And just by watching the crowd, I believe there was as much or more interested folks watching the smaller manual mills, with intentions of purchasing. Just my observation,,witnessing many conversations after the shoot out. That said, Hank can surely get through a log deck pretty quick, every time I've seen him saw.  The logs are all scaled, then sorted into groups with very small variations of footage. The logs are then grouped into groups of 4, and assigned an letter for ID purposes, then these are randomly drawn from a hat.  Once they teams get they respective deck of logs they with JR get them into position for the shoot out. The numbers that are crunched are based on the logs they have and the time in which it took to saw them,  and it's possible to have rejects, seen a few, and I've seen some pretty stuff too.  Restacking and sorting the piles of lumber is not that much fun  ;D

Thanks man, good to be,,I will try to contain my emotions , seeing it seems to always get me in trouble , and My remarks as to the shoot out, was off the cuff, but a decent generic description of some of what happens.  I will say, in my short course up there, it was a very good experience.  The folks I met, from all over this country, and a few from beyond,  best not mention names, but they know who they are,, great fellows, that love the industry.  And I have to say this,,all the Manufacturers with their sawmill reps were all cordial, and professional.  So many things involving industry's of all sorts have to weighed out with a steady measure.  The Paul Bunyan show like all others is a gathering of sales associates, and it's a good thing, just saying things have to be measured and double checked like everything else.. The best part of these events are the people we meet, I mean, it's a grass roots thing, real folks with real issues, and remedies, that are truly American with a get'r done attitude,, I like it, thanks again Furu, hope your day and  up coming week end is a good one!

Hey drobertson!  Good to see you here.

If you care about being a member of the other forum, be very careful what you say here as they are paranoid and read this forum all the time.  I got booted over there for something I wrote here.  That's how pathetic Jeff Brokaw and his minions are!  lol  But let it be known, it's so free here you are free to say whatever you want, how you want.  No communism or socialism here!

Over here you wont get blasted for giving your honest opinion like on that other forum,  almost every mill has good and bad points but over there a few select snobs act like only 1 mill is perfect.   Steve

yea, well howdy back at you guys,, I have no axe to grind, folks are folks take the good with the bad, aint' no one perfect that's for sure, myself included, flaws running out my ears, no, that's them hairs grandpa had, flaws none the less.  I really did miss the shoot out this year,, I was hoping Dave B would call, but, I reckon he was worried about something else, maybe my back, its better, meaning I can walk without pain, other than my right knee, another issue like we all have, that said , there are some good folks up there, from the crew to the volunteers  from the local High school keeping time, it's a group effort trying to bring to light these mills and the different ways of turning rounds into squares,, it's pretty cool, and the food don't hurt much either,,
