Best Firewood Trees?
« on: March 27, 2008, 04:05:05 PM »
My wife is a Master Gardener and a question popped up on there blog about what the best trees to plant for the sole purpose of firewood would be.

Any suggestions?  I know growing trees for firewood is not excatly what we think about but appearantly some folks are starting to think that way for the alternative fuel.

Personaly, I think there is enough tops out there from what ever is growing to have more than enough fire wood but anyway.

If you were going to grow trees for the sole purpose of harvesting them for firewood, what tree would you grow?

Hardwoods are the best.

Oak, hard maple, beech for BTU per volume.  Softoods have the most BTU's per pound.  It all depends on your soils and climate as to what you can grow. One should grow the best suited merchantable tree for their soils and climate and utilize the cull trees and tops for fuel wood.  One cannot afford to plant trees for firewood.

I suspect if you work it out business-like, the best number of BTU's per year would come from something like Poplar or Aspen.

They grow like weeds, the hardwoods give you lots of BTU's but grow so slowly it would be your grandkids burning it.

There's about 50 acres of good-sized Poplar on a field up the road from me, when I was a kid the owner grazed beef cattle out there, not a tree in sight!!

Out here on the Left Coast or Oregon and the central part of the Willametee Valley, I would probaby grom ZWestern Big Leaf Maple and Wild Cherry, for fuel.  They both regenerate  as a stump culture, in as 5 to ten year turnaround time that would make it worth the effort.

As always, I totally agree with Mr. Pender.
Everyone wants to hoard oak, but cherry, aldar, maple; OH YEAH!!!!
By the way, do you know where some can be found to cut?  :o

Oh talk about good fortune!!!

I got a call last night from a guy we did some work for a couple of years back, he's just bought an old farm just north-west of here as a getaway place.

He needs some help with a 'problem' he has with it though, his wife & daughter are 'horsey people' and it seems there's a 20 acre apple orchard that is all over-grown and he wants it out. He called the landscape contractor he normally uses and got a pretty horrendous price to remove the trees.

So, 20'ish acres, at 200 trees per acre, woo-hoo!!! 400 apple trees worth of firewood!!!

The best part, I get paid to take it!!   :o

Anybody need apple wood chips for their smoker?  ;D

And before you ask, nope, the horseshoes don't hurt much when I sit down at all!!

I have been using a mixture of black cherry and hard(sugar) maple lately on chicken and ribs.  I'll have to try some apple this winter when it is appropriate to prune the apples.  Anyone ever try crab-apple? :-\
