I had my band wheels off so I could remachine the bearing bearing races.
Today I put everything back together and fired the mill up for the first time
this year. I cut some walnut. everything worked great. Honda started on the
3rd pull. we still got snow on the ground. Ready for spring I am....

So you built this saw right? How bout some better pics. I've seen close ups of parts your working on, and now this pic. I'd like to see the "machine" itself please.

AO - you're making nice looking lumber down there, I tell ya what.  A good square looking cant sitting there waiting to be turned into whatever you imagination decides is always a cool thing...

Let me know what parts of the mill you want to see... This picture is the router plane attachment I made to fit on the mill. It also has a drum sander attachment on it's back.

Thanks. My problem is getting it to that square cant stage (which is why I guess EVERYONE does the "live edge" stuff , which looks neat but is unusable till you cut the edges off!!) (sorry bout the rant) anyway, seems like a lot of waste getting to that cant sometimes, but maybe that's just the nature of the beast! With my new endeavor of making those pallets I cut off the bark and then make a few thin slices of (live edge ;-) ) boards that I trim and use for pallet material.

If there is a good/better way of getting to that cant hidden in there I'd love to hear it, If not I'll continue on my way of stacking then burning all those flitches(?) .

Cut ... Flip....Square...Cut....Flip...Cut...Flip....and cut...
Most important is squaring up the first cuts.

Thanks, that picture right there was kind of what I was looking for.

I also found your other thread on here so I'm watching that too.

So you have a planer and a drum sander as part of your mill? You cant do those functions till the wood dries correct? So in fact you are just using your power source for multiple functions yes?

So how thick are those first cuts? If I cut them thick it seems I am wasting a lot of wood, If I cut thin slices seems like TONS of work dressing them up.

When you first start out you will be saving all you can until you get so much
Wood you wont know what to do with it all. I built a wood burner for my
home so now I'm not wasting anything and I don't feel so bad about letting
some meat on my cut-off's. One thing you need to look for is an edger. An
edger will save you tons of work. They are also great for making stickers.
Another thing when I first started out was trying to get all long stuff from
my logs. If you log has a small bend in it you will loose a lot of lumber.
Sometimes it's best to cut it in half to save more boards. If you don't have
a toe jack that's another thing that would save you a lot of lumber. Lifting
the log a few inches on the small end will give you more lumber.

I have to say some of the SYP is real nice looking lumber.  You are turning out some good stuff.

I use some of the "leftovers" of starting the log as firewood and some I just give up and put through the chipper and turn it into chips for spreading out for nutrient return to the forest floor.

I do have a woodburner in my house, but pine is not the greatest thing to burn. I use some of it for kindling..

And here is my "toe jack" :-) Just a small floor jack I use..

PICTURES DELETED DUE TO PHOTO BUCKETS NEW POLCIES

Here is a tree I used to make a 16 foot 6x6, the toe jack was necessary to make it centered..

So when I'm cutting up logs I almost always measure up from the saw bed to compare center heights at each end, if they are within about an inch or so I don't normally adjust it , other than in the case of like that 6x6. Opinions on how close the ends should be??

I've been just burning the pine cutoffs, But I do spread the sawdust and planer shavings in my food plot fields for a little biomass.. my soil here is real sandy and it needs all the help it can get.

I made my wood stove forced air. I burn anything that doesn't have creosote on it.
I have no problems because my chimney is enclosed so it stays hot all the time.

3 pulls to start a Honda? Something wrong there. Better have it looked at.

Good job centering the pith on that tapered log, AO.  It makes a big difference in making straight posts.

Thanks.
I did two of those that day, they both turned out pretty good. They were my first attempt at it and were "practice logs. I want to put a roof over my mill and a couple drying roofs... I'm going to need a few more of them.

I cut a bunch of 4x4s and some of them aren't staying so straight (pith not centered) I'll use the crooked ones for firewood racks..

My Honda has 12v electric start but I have not taken the time to hook it to my 24v system. It starts so easy with the rope.

Electric start was one of those things I wanted when I was looking at mills. Had both my shoulders done and didn't want to pull that rope all day..
