Alrighty then, I lowered the stops and moved the log over, AND I cut me some wedges and used them till I had room to use the dogs, AND used my little top handle chainsaw to relieve where needed. So I used ALL your ideas, thanks guys... I'm learning!

A couple times I had to shift that log left or right while I was in the middle of a cut, blade in log! But I got it done and got a pretty nice little pallet of wood I think. And I know that's not much of a log to some of you guys, but it was a whopper to me, had a little fun rolling it by hand!

 Here's proof!

What do you have to do the banding straps?

Good job.  Big is always relative to the machinery, so yeah - that was a big log but you whittled it down until it was manageable and made it happen.  That learning curve is priceless.

Ever think of using your loader to turn large logs?  Just need some chain/cable and a skidding hook/half a skidding tong.

Just el cheapo ratchet straps, Harbor freight had them on sale for $6.99 a four pack, northern hydraulics about the same so I bought some of each to try out. If you band wet wood, when it dries the bands will get loose, with these I figure I can just give them another couple cranks.

Actually I have thought of that, I have plenty of chain here ,and I bought a hook from a cant hook a while back to try out. Just haven't tried it yet. Thought I might today but got it done without, thanks. I see some use an engine hoist with a hook too. To hard to position I think though unless its sitting on concrete..

I prefer to use a nylon strap. wrap 1.5 times then just lift.

Now this one is nice. But I load on one side of my mill , and unload on the other, it would get in the way..

no hooks. two ways you can do it.

1. wrap the strap around the log then over itself for at least 1/2 more wrap usually more if you are going to just use friction. Then use your tractor engine hoist high lift jack whatever to lift the end of the strap. Make sure you wrap it so us you pull and the log rolls out from the wrap it is rolling towards the backstops. This can get ugly fast if done backwards :)

2. with a loop on the end of the strap you can run the strap through itself then around the log. wrap however many turns you want and same lifting technique as above.

both these techniques work very well and are very controllable. In fact instead of lifting the strap you could pull it to the side or pull it straight down. I find lifting is usually quite a bit easier than trying to pull it. But it also depends on what you have to lift with. I guess in the end this technique is not much different that using a cant hook. But it is a ton easier on the body. and less likely to roll on you as you are setting the clamps.

Good job on getting that big log converted into boards.  There are a lot of little workarounds that you will learn as you go.  The bad news is... now you know it was within the limits of your mill and you'll have to find something bigger.   ;D

Thanks

NOOOOOOOOOO.... ok, maybe.

I've done bigger longer, not bigger around though. And not really sure I want to. 18 inchers are a good size for me.. but if I stumble on one...

My bed is 19'2"which lets me cut 16'6".. not sure if I'll ever need longer or not.

And those longer logs are pretty unwieldly...

especially with my manual mill. Loading them will be a challenge but rolling them will also be. this is when I think I need to get the winch, and ramps built. at least then I can load and flip without killing myself.

Definitely should be doing toe boards to.

I have been looking at using threaded rod and a ladder type frame that when you crank the threaded rod lifts the bottom. that way I can have a crank on both sides of the mill so I can raise and lower from sawdust side or load side. It seems I spend alot of time on both sides of the mill so I want to minimize my need to keep going around it.

I should probably just buy another battery for the bed and run everything off electric motors. with wireless remotes. but thats a future possible project. Maybe V2.0 :)
