I'm getting closer to having my new shed (30x60) ready. Concrete man suppose to come this week. I'm going to use it mainly for storing my live edge slabs but it's big enough for me to move my planer and dust collector out there. It about 300 ft from my electric box at the house and I was thinking about buying a generator to supply electric out there. It would not get used much, at least for what I'm doing now. My planer is 5hp and runs about 27 amps and dust collector is less than half of that. I've been told a 15,000 watt generator would work and also told it would not. Anyone here done any thing close to this?
I don't want to power company to come and put up new pole.

"X" I think you would be better served running power to your building, could be overhead or under ground. If you want to get a generator the line could be used to backfeed your house during power outages. Power is handy especially for lighting. Frank C.

new line is out from power company, don't need people coming out here no more than I can help and it's a long run from my panel box, along with some under ground lines and water lines out there now.

In theory a 15,000 watt generator at 240 volts should get you 62.5 amps.  So you have 40 amps or so of running amperage for planer and dust collector with a nice cushion available at the genset of 22.5 theoretical amps for extras like lights or other things.  If the generator is what you want it should work just fine.  I have a tractor PTO generator at 15,000 watts and it cost around $1100 total bought through Rural King online and shipped truck freight.  Pretty cheap way for lots of backup power.  Do you have a tractor of at least 25 hp?

A 30 x 60 would be completely awesome for us here right now.  With a concrete floor too?  I'd be spoiled rotten and loving every minute of it.  Congratulations on reaching a point where you can get this kind of thing done.

Generators are a big thing today. Around the cities, generator shops are sometimes overwhelmed with trade ins and take outs. Diesel is what you want, propane or natural is what there is too much of. Gasoline can be a problem when not used often. Always get bigger than you need. The boxes you would need to install are all over the place used.

So you could always rent a trencher (careful where underground stuff is) and run a line from your box, run a waterline at the same time. Big enough wire will be expensive but for that you can use aluminum and save a bunch of money. And yes wiring to back run for a generator is nice. I have an 8700 W generator in one of my buildings that can, and has, run my house when I lost power.

anybody interested I have a 4.0 high output straight 6 out of a jeep. would work great to run any size generator.

I was thinking about a PTO generator and not ruled it out but it would be nicer just to have something there power by an engine attached and not drop anything from tractor for a quick planer job. I have a generator here at the house but its not strong enough. I only run non ethanol gas and sometimes its months between start up and cranks first pull.  The planer runs at 27 amps and I've heard they take 2 or 3 times more to start up, not sure if that true. The shed is replacing a 24x40 with a dirt floor that collapsed before Christmas from a snow load. I'll try a picture but not sure I can get it on here.
