New Timber Framers Tool

Jim Rogers, a well known Timber Framer has invented a new tool for Timber Measuring etc.  He is looking at puting it into production and needs some support.

So what exactly does the new tool do?

It allows you to attach a combination square ruler to a standard framing square for making accurate measurements.

This looks like a cool tool - but I'm still failing to see the purpose of it??? Why can't I just measure the mortise you were talking about with a normal ruler?

Because in the case of the photos, the distance is from the other side of the timber, and in square rule timber framing layout, that other side is the reference side. All measurements have to be made from that side. Rough saw timbers have unusual variability and that means you can't rely on just measuring in with a regular ruler.
