Bees
« on: October 07, 2008, 09:54:24 PM »
Hey, I have a bees knees idea.  I have this ex student that is a renound keeper of bees.  In fact, he is so renound that he holds a high position in the state of Oregon's bee keepers association, like president or something.

Anyway, if he is around at all, he might get prepared to help me maintain clean colonies and extact the honey from my soon to be two colonies here on the tree farm.  I am getting the colonies from his friend Steve from Independence.

What say ye, Harry?

You will want to pull your honey by August 1st.
Have Steven (a very good friend) pull your honey and bring it over.
I'll send you home with bucket (s) of honey and empty honey supers for use in the following year.
I hope 2009 is as good a honey year as 2008!

Several of my friends are bee keepers and I'm going to give it a try next year.  It sounds like fun and we will probably see better pollination of our fruit trees and garden.

I might have some equipment you could use, like a whole set up, hive bodies to extractor.
I used to keep bees and was Pres of Coos County beekeeprs for a short time.  The most fun was going into the local school and doing a presentation on bees for the kids.  And then giving out samples of fresh comb honey on crackers.  ;D ;D ;D
Bee keeping can be hard on the back but it does teach you patients.

Geee, do not tell Harry, he will want everything. ;D  I could use any hive boxes you might have and perhaps everything, if you are serious.

Get serious, Harry.  I will be leaving all of that to you.  I will wait in the wings for the fruit of the bees efforts dealing with my Poison Oak nector.

Frank,
Beekeeping is a participatory sport.  You have to get stung to enjoy it.

We can work something out on the equipment if you decide to get serious.

You won't need a lot more than the hives 'till spring.  Just pick a good spot to put them, out of the way but easy to get to where they won't be flying over an area with a lot of people/vehicle  traffic.

I have some great spots for them but that getting stung part just sucks.

Experts, tell me if I am wrong but I would suggest keeping an Ephineprin injector (Epi Pen) handy because the day you get stung and have an anaphalactic reaction it may save you life.  Our local bee guy hit that point last fall and it saved his life.

Some people never have a problem as a mater of fact there is a Bee Therapy for MS where captured bees are made to sting the patient.

Antihistamine works as a first line of defence for some to prevent a reaction.  Personal opinion is if I needed to carry an injection to save my life I probable shouldn't be playing with bees, but some do.

This guy did not have one but we keep them on the Ambulance.  As you stated, he figured it was time to stop playing with them.

When you get stung as often as i do your body gets bored with bee venom and stings become a non issue.
No itching, redness, swelling, nothing.
You get stung on the arm and 10 minutes later you can't remember which arm it was.
If one is concerned, I always reccomend that they see an alergist for a test.

I will have to put you off for a week or two, as I have a couple conferences to attend this week and next.  Seaside this week is the state gathering of Fire Boards and chiefs and next week is the gathering of Soil and Conservatioin Districts  at Newport.  I wiill check in the meantime about the availability of the bees from our friend on Greenwood Road, in Independence.
