12" jointer
« on: October 20, 2008, 10:18:47 AM »
I shave a chance to pick up a 12" jointer for $1250.00/  It is rated at the top of the list with wood working circles.  Just another possible toy, the wife says.  I say it is a stong potential for addition income and diversity of services.

12" jointers are nice but unless your doing lots of woodworking Im not sure what value it would add.

Well, it turned out that it was not what I thought it was in the beginning.  I had misread the statment in the ad and the picture was not clear.  No sale to me, after the visit, yesterday.  Besides, you are correct, Kirk, wants vs. needs. ;D

A jointer, any size, has lost a lot of appeal in most woodshops...probably due to the advancements in cutting tools. With excellent carbide blades on table saws, who needs a "jointed" edge for glue ups now?

I bought a new 6 inch jointer, and I bet I haven't used it half a dozen times. For that matter, I have 2 of them...a smaller 4 inch Rockwell I use to take on job sites, but a hand held, power planer killed that as well......things do advance and change.

I would still like to have a 112" jointer for making one side flat and then plain.
