Stickers
« on: August 22, 2009, 08:04:27 PM »
hello everyone. This is my first time at posting. Hope you can help. I am going to build a DH kiln soon. Right know I am going to air dry my wood. I would like to know if I can use plywood for stickers?
Thanks woodman58

Yes you can.  That can be costly with current plywood prices but as long as its 5/8ths or better it will work well.  3/4" is preferable.

Also, how many stickers per level of 9 foot long boards?

I place them every 18".  Make sure the end stickers are within a few inches of the ends.

Woodman 58, I use stickers that are no less than one inch square.  I do not get a rolling after affect with that dimension.  The big boy kilns in my area use a sticker that is 3/4" thick and 1 1/2" wide.  I use to make them 54" long, but have converted to 48" in length for the convenience of the forks on the loader.

With the one inch thick sticks I feel I get a better air flow for both air drying and in the kiln.

If you are looking for a stick that will last a long time and as a result cost you much less in the long run I recommend the Iron Stick…

Most all of my stickers are no less than 4 years old.  I make them out of Douglas Fir lumber.  I have tried using Cottonwood, but they move sideways, too much.
