Pen with wood supplied by SteveM
« on: July 28, 2010, 08:12:21 PM »
Was asked to see if this wood is any good.  While no one wood would ever be perfect(at least I haven't found one), this one performed well enough.  Wood was Garry Oak(also known as Oregon White Oak or Oregon Oak), but I like the simple name "Garry".  As with all oaks I've ever turned, there was some tear-out...but that was fixed with some thin CA during the turn.

I'd give the wood a solid "B", on the letter grading system!  Will it sell, in the right quantity, or in mixed lots...probably so.  Will people be knocking the hinges off the door....with this coloring, just can't say.  Have already emailed the price I would expect to pay to Steve.....

Kit: Pro Slimline Click Pen w/Brushed Satin finish
Wood: Garry Oak
Finish: 3x CA/BLO, Plastix polish and waxed

Thanks SBD777.  You do awesome work.

And that wood was basicly in or going to be in the firewood pile.

Frank aways says that he gets more for is waste wood than he does for his boards.  I'm starting to be a believer.

I've purchased booth space at a Saturday Faire just up the road from me.  Going to have on display and for sale some of my "Fire wood" like in oak pen blanks, "hobby boards" (planed oak shorts) and one 2 x 2 x 12"  figured maple turning blank and some Red Wood yard furniture that I made.  This is a test!  We'll see what happens.
Good exposure on Hwy 22 going to the mountains.  http://www.cascadefoothillsfaire.org
