Under barred....
« on: July 14, 2010, 05:25:25 PM »
Found out while I was slabbing a piece of Rock Maple near my dad's place in Maine....  I'm under barred(not enough lenght)!!!

What can a Stilh MS390 handle as far as bar lenght?  Hoping that 40" would be okay.....

Anyone think this bar would be too much?

With  my 044s I have been told that my 36" bar is right at the limit of the saw head.  Most cutters I know around here that use an 044 limit their bar length to a 32"

I don't think you'd be happy with that big of a bar.  40"s is a lot of chain to pull.

If it was just reach you were looking for ok, but you're talking using the whole width to cut with

Would a skip tooth chain have less resistance ?? Never used one, but, Slabbers do. Got an old chain you could grind off every other tooth, and see if the saw pulls IT any easier ???

Well that wasn't exactly what I was hoping to see this morning...

Is it more the weight of pulling the chain, or the possibility of lacking lubrication on the bar?  At that lenght, I would think the chain to be quite dry by getting all the way back to the oiler....additional tip oiler?

Skip tooth would be less friction, but do they make one as a ripping chain?(Guess I need to call Bailey's and talk to a rep).  Or maybe just the 33LP ripping chain, it wouldn't take as much on a bite....still need to call them to find out for sure.....

If that 044 is at the limit with a 36", then I'm thinking I'd be at the limit around 28", maybe less as the manufacturer offers a 25" as max for the 039 on their website.

Guess I'll need to walk past those bigger chunks for awhile until I re-think the process.  After all, do I really need to be making table tops or anything.....

Thanks guys!

The first cut wasn't a problem, but the next slab had to be cut from different directions, and the third cut...my 24" didn't touch in the middle!  And I wasn't even close to the middle of the log....

It'll be drug to my dad's place for firewood this winter when the ground is frozen.  After all, he's got to stay warm this winter!!!!

 C'mon. You live in Arkansas.  ::) ::) ::) ::)

When I lived in Bruno, I met 2 brothers that had welded 3 bars together, to cut down a Red Oak. You wanna see Redneck, just look around.

These guys were steady customers bringing me logs. I met them right after the BIG log incident, BUT, I did see photos, and know the guy that brought them over to my mill.

Wasn't really an option at the time...York County Sheriff lives across the street.  It's kind of nice knowing that a law enforcement type lives close by the folks, but at the same time....it just keeps you from being able to have a lot of fun.

Harold, you one crazy fella!!!! LMAO here dude!
Regardless, I don't think I'll test my welding skills(useless I can have it on video for uploading to YouTube or something)....

Nothing illegal about blowing a log up!  Plunge cut the bar to the center, pack with Pyrodex muzzleloading powder, cannon fuse, pack with sawdust, Light, and enjoy watching a big log split right down the middle!

Wouldn't the log popping be considered a destructive device?

I'm not thinking it could be considerd a 'cannon'?

Do a Google search for black powder log splitting.  Show the sherriff what your wanting to accomplish and see what he says first.  The amount of powder you have to use is no more than a snuff can full and I know of no federal law that forbids you from doing this but that doesnt mean a wacked out sherriff would try to make up his own law and make you life tuff.

Tannerite is another option.  There is Youtube videos of that stuff where guys are blowing up trees, washing machines, cars etc but doing so in a location that is safe from causing harm to anyone.  Its sold over the counter, online etc, and is not considered an explosive until you mix the two parts together.

We use it several times a week during target practive.  Nothing like making a big BOOM at 300 yards with a rifle! It takes the impact of a high velocity bullet to set it off (2000fps) .
