Title: Chicago Wood & Equipment run!
Post by: Kirk Allen on January 25, 2009, 08:15:41 PM
My wife and I are heading north to Chicago in the morning with a trailer load of Spalted Maple, Spalted Sycamore, Wide plank Red Oak, Ash, Cherry, Maple, and Eastern Red Cedar.

We have 4 stops to make and plan on bringing home a Delta 6x48 Belt Sander that is a year old and used very little. Trading some 12/4 maple for it, or $75.  I will decide when I get there.

That Same stop I am picking up a 1969 Craftsman Radial Arm Saw for $100.  :)

Then I have two wood sale stops that cover the cost of the tools I picked up in the morning as well as getting my Steel City Cabinet saw in exchange for lumber and some cash, which also came from lumber sales.

Once that is loaded and secured on the trailer its off to the last stop of the day to pick up a Milwaukee circular saw. $90, which again, is paid for from the lumber sales previously.  Its brand new and still in the box!  :)

If all goes as planned the trip is only going to cost me about 1 tank of fuel, and with diesel hitting $1.99 a gal, my fill up only cost me $39.95 so I think I am coming out smelling like a rose!   :)

Next Satuday its off to a small town north of me to trade 75 board feet of soft maple for a Steel City Benchtop Mortiser!   :)

Dont have the pics yet but I also picked up a an Antique Rockwell 6"x48" belt sander with the original welded metal stand, and a shaping sander/circular flap sander.

Overall, I ended up with a truck load of tools, sold the extra 100 bf of lumber I took with me and it all only cost me a day of driving and two tanks of gas.

My wife went with me though so it was like a mini vacation that I got to bring home toys ;D

Kirk,

Radial Arm looks the same as a friend of mine had while at college in Iowa (1972)

This last year one of my best friends moved to Anderson, IN and a niece to Muncie.  By the map looks like they are the same distance or less from you, than your trip to Chicago.

Definatly closer than Chicago.  Just the lack of traffic in Indiana makes them closer :D

Southern Indiana got hammered.  Just west of me, in the Terre Haute, IN area they got snow.  Should be fine now as long as this storm passing tonight doesnt make too much of a mess.

Well, Kirk, I am in the same sawdust pile.  I use to do a great deal of woodworking as well and now, all I got time for is making the material for others projects. :'( :'( :'(

C'mon guys the 'feeling' is not all that bad. Each time you 'open' one of those logs its like getting a present. Plus - you get to be the artist in creating the canvas of those woody frames. And you are in the 'board room' which means you make all the important decisions ;D

Stephen,
Yes it's like getting a present when you open those logs up but only if you keep the wood. :-\

Now on this 'Board Room" matter, we dont have one, want one, or need one! ;D ;)
