Well its that time of year again ;D Landed about 40 trees today from two different locations. All from at some point over the past several years giving them some lumber for a project or two. ;D
Landed another 10 trees for a whopping .05 cents a BF! Might as well be free :D The farmer got a bid from a local logger and it was for .04 cents a BF. He didnt realy need the money and the logger pissed him off enough that he told me they were mine for the taking at .05 cents a BF. Scaled them out this afternoon and looks like at least 6500 BF of logs ;D Mostly walnut and one white oak that has to be in the 60" diameter range.

Geeeeeeeeeeeee, I am gestting to be a great influence on your style, Kirk. Well done.
-
4 cents for walnut?
That guy must have been trying to buy it for cutting up to make pallets, huh?
blocking rates for decent logs....I think I see why he was pithed off ;)
-
As long as he wasnt pithed off at me :)

Got a call from the Road Commissioner about a pretty nice Hickory that was blown over in the wind storm.
He cut the top off of it to open up the road and said I could have the rest :o
The top, which is this pic, is 48 feet from the stump. The top measured 25" in diameter :o I cant wait to see how big it is at the stump.

You can see in this pic how it sticks "straight" out over the ditch.

Not the best pic, but you can see how far it goes back into the woods. I think this is probably the longest Hickory I have seen that is straight and solid. The first 12 feet of this tree are venerre quality!

Well done on the both of ye.
Kirk, on the Hickory, is the remainder of the tree on private property?
-
Its in a nature conservatory but I was given the whole tree.
Corrected numbers, pics to come soon. 52 1/2 feet long! I got 5 logs from it, each one 10' 6" long!
The butt log was 34" diameter.

so what blad do you recomend on hickory
last time i cut hickory with 7/8" 10 degre they dulled quick
-
I use a 9 degree WM blade. I have used the 4 degree but realy didnt notice much difference. Shag Bark seems to be the hard one of the hickorys. This one is Pignut Hickory. Note the indentation into FROZEN ground :o

We tried to drag the whole log out in one piece but that was not happing with the JD 4020.
I cut it up into 5 logs and we skidded them down the road to Jims yard for later pick up.

All the skidding was done by my old friend Jim. He was bundled up good to stay warm. Wind was a killer today.

Jims place is across the road from the conservatory. This is the third monster tree to fall in the last 6 months and each time the tops have taken out his wire on his fence on the far side of the road. In exchange for fixing the fence, they let us keep the logs :)

hi jim
great looking logs i have only cut shagbark hickory so far & i axe off most the bark as its like cutting tin
-
the modify is not here on this thread but is on the other one
-
I like hickory....BUT Man that stuff is tuff to dry and get a decent grade out of ;)
Another lovely factoid is that before it hit the ground the worms and wood grubs had their bibs on and their knife and fork out....they are brutal on it and hit it In a hurry :D.
-
I have found cutting it in the winter works best and I tend to cut it a little heavy as to prevent end checks.
We went and picked up all the logs today. My brother, the clown :D, helped me par-buckle them up onto the imfamous trailer that was not supposed to be able to haul stuff like this :D Remember those conversations Buzz? :D :D

As a point of reference, the supports on the side of the trailer are 48" tall and the trailer deck is excatly 30'. We managed to put three of the logs in the center, one up front and the last one in the back. Trying to balance the load ;D

Yea I remember those discussions....heck it was easier to drive over to your house and build the thing than listen to all the reasons it would work/be safe

Landed a monster Walnut from my Brother yesterday! 40" DIB with that lead into a monster crotch that splits into 2 more 10 foot logs that are 14" diameter.
We used to hang our deer from this tree. With all the wet ground and wind it uprooted. Bad for him, good for me ;D
After walking through his woods there is probably another 5000+ bf of timber blown over. Several cherry, white oak and a few maples.
Going to be a busy spring ;D
