Well. I am pleasantly surprised to find this 'department' in this forum! I come here looking for info on sawmills and find a bunch of Brothers in Christ! (haven't seen any Sisters yet...apologies if you're out there!)
I found out last week that a guy I went to school with in Nome, Alaska was mauled severely by a grizzly bear. Wes Perkins is his name. He's now in Seattle in the hospital. Last week they did surgery on his eye but won't know till maybe sometime this week if they were able to save his vision. Last report I had said he would have surgery to reconstruct his jaw this week. At the beginning of this year, Wes lost his wife, whom I graduated with, to cancer. They have 2 or 3 teen aged children. Please keep this family in much prayer for Wes' recovery, for spiritual comfort and for finances. Also, I would add there may be need of salvation. I haven't seen Wes in more yrs than I would care to say but I'm going to assume from 'grapevine news' that it's needed. A benefit fund raiser was held Sat and it is said that quite a bit of money was raised. Figure what a regular ambulance ride is here in the "lower 48" then try to imagine what Medi-Vac flight from Nome to Anchorage (reg. auto fuel is about twice what it is here in TX, now figure jet fuel as the only way in/out of Nome is to fly) then on to Seattle. Not to mention hospital expenses!
below is link to the first news article I received from mutual friend still in Nome:

I'm waiting on news of Wes' current progress. Will update when I find out something. And thank you both for your prayers!

If they transported him to Seattle I am betting he will make it!
I spent 12 years on Anchorage and I bet he needed a specialist for his surgery's as those are slim pickins in Anchorage.

Got 18 yrs in various places in Alaska: Anchorage, Northway, Anchor Point, Nome. Dad worked for FAA...elec. tech. Out of all those, Nome stole my heart. If I couldn't live here in E. Texas...I have a sneakin' suspicion I'd move to Nome.
Still haven't received update on Wes.

Our future home is in the Haines area! You can have the communist state of Illinois!
If it wasnt for the farm and my Dad I would be gone yesterday!

No trees in Nome.

LOL Steve! If you drive about 70 mi to the E...you start running into some trees. And there's plenty of drift wood. How does that do on a mill? ;)

Update on Wes:
" He is scheduled for a 10-12 hour surgery on the 1st (tomorrow) for the reconstruction of his jaw. I think the original plan is to do a bone graft from his leg for his jaw. Things do change so we shall see what pans out. On Friday or Saturday, he developed pneumonia in one of his lungs, so they gave him heavy antibiotics and he seems to be responding to that very well. I do believe that if he continues, the surgery will continue as scheduled. There was some talk about using tissue to attach to his tongue to help him be able to speak, but don't know much about that one. He goes on small walks with a walker and help from family, around the hospital. He is able to sit up in a chair a couple times a day and is writing his conversations. He has many family members with him, and they are rotating shifts, as Wes does not want to be left alone. " (email from friend)
Please keep Wes in prayer today for that surgery! Thank y'all!

Just ran across this thread. Good luck to Wes. Can't possibly imagine being attacked by something that large. I saw all the Bear mounts in the Anchorage Airport :o :o :o :o
That there Nome place, would be just the ticket for my 4" Gold Suction Dredge. Hint hint, Kirk. ;D ;D ;D

Might happen sooner than later Harold!

I haven't heard any reports on Wes since I was off-line. Need to do that!
Gold and Nome: I've done a wee bit o' that type of work. My now ex-husband and very good friend and I did some sluicing the summer after I graduated. Red sand - good. Black sand - better. Way back in the early 80's when I was there, you could set up on the beach anywhere ya wanted. Don't know if you can still do that or not. The gold industry has picked up in that area alot more than it was when I lived there. If I remember correctly, there are two VERY large dredges in operation there now. That good friend I mentioned above has a brother who is pretty high up in the gold co. Kirk...if you want to head to Nome, let me know and I'll give you names of people to hook up with. Remember: it's not always what ya know...but WHO ya know, that can make a difference. ;)
