Title: Harold....first two!

Got to say, this 45* bias cut stuff is a PITA.  Not going to say how long it took to make 'em....but it was twice as long as normal.

Got two more to make for ya still.....hopefully next weekend?

They sure look good though. Maybe you could charge 45% more for the PITA  ;D

I have to say, you told me about cutting the wood this way.  ::) ::) ::) :D :D :D

What is it doing that's such a PITA ???

Have you tried any crosscut Lapo, yet ???

By the way, got another Terciopelo, today. He's salted and in the freezer, also.  ;D ;D ;D

Thinking there are probably about 20 hoops to jump through to import snake skin into the states?  But don't let that stop ya from whackin' every one of 'em ya see!!!!

The PITA...just grain structure, absolutely nothing that can be done about it until it's on the lathe(glued/epoxied to the tube).  I fired up the lathe, ran the 1/2" gouge across the belt sander(fresh edge), started knocking off the edges and BAM!!! grain blowout!!!  I've had this happen to many types of wood, and I don't know what causes it....but I've learned the 'repair'.  And you'd be hard pressed to see where I put it back together(most people never know it came apart).

Haven't had the chance to turn anything else yet....wanting to get your stuff out of the way first.(I'm funny like that)
Did have a wood sale during the turning of the first one, local fella came by....think he wanted your blanks.  Told him they were spoken for, so he started digging into the spalted pile.

Scott (sweat running in your crack is a PITA) B

I have had success using heavy grit sand paper when turning instead of trying to cut it with the tools.  No tear out that way!  Takes longer but with delicate wood it works great.

Scott,

What would it take to  ($$$) to set up a basic pen turning operation? Lathe and tools?

Not for me but a seed for somebody else.

Is the Penn State stuff worth having?

You do really nice work.  I checked my yard again and couldn't find any of that wood!  Damn!!

I have a Jet mini lathe and turning tools, pen press etc and I have less than $500 in it all.

I had a freind of my sons that put himself through college turning penns here at my place and selling them at school to professors, hospitals, etc.

It gave him the business owner attitude on life!  Kid turned out alright in spite of 4 years of liberal education!

The Penn State stuff is OK, but I'd look around on Craigslist or something to try and find a Jet lathe(or same quality in a different name).

If you drill the blanks on the lathe(like I do) it will save a bit of cash too, and then the only other thing you'd need is something to cut the blanks with.

Lathe(chisel set-gouge/skew)
Drill press(or use the lathe)
Small saw

Should be able to get these for under $500 used?

IF I EVER get to saw up the Mango Tree, in front of the school house, I will show y'all AWESOME.

Might have to see about a photo of that tree, before it gets taken down, IF it ever does. Locals are talking about it.

Scott,

Given a choice would you rather work with dry pens blanks or green?

Just got some small maple burls and wondering how to treat them with pen blanks in mind.  Don't even know which direction to cut them in.  No real direction of grain.

Pen blanks....hmmm?  Where to start.....

Typically with burls, I'll cut 'em a little oversized...then after dry, I'll re-cut 'em square(just about every burl I've cut curls, warps, shrinks a little).  Direction of the grain doesn't really matter, it's got more to do with the amount of 'burly-ness' continueing throughout the entire blank(that'll make the blank worth more when trying to sell 'em).  As far as over-size size.....7/8"sq x 5-3/8" to 5-3/4"

As you stated....direction of the grain doesn't really matter.  Because you really don't want to have 'grain' in a burl blank.

Do you have any photo's of the burl?  Love wood porn!

Scott (wood porn is better then, nah) B

 That's a dandy, right there.  ;D ;D ;D ;D

They would never be able to hold it up, by hand, if they used any of the wood from down here.  ::) ::) :D :D
