First try at post & beam

After reading Rob Roy's book on timber framing, (I know, the purists may be cringing) I've started an 8' by 14' shed to house my air compressor, backup generator, welding equip & other assorted tools.  Just an experiment, and a way to try out a couple of different joints.  My first "experiment" was to see whether I could cut shoulders on the posts, using my portable sawmill and chain saw.  It was easier than I thought it would be.  I also tried a splice joint that I had seen before, just to see how it works.  Beginner's luck, I guess, because it was a pretty fair fit, though I've since been told to cut off the points at an angle so that the ends lock in place.  If I keep this up, I'll have to invest in some serious tools.

 That's looking pretty good, so far. Yes, interlocking joints don't place the strain on the pegs. They just hold the beams from separating. Joinery can be a very satisfying endeavor. Keep posting photos.

I'd love to see some more pictures of what you have done since you posted these. I'm about to start on a mill shed and looking for some ideas. I would really like to use my own milled timber.
