New Member - Hello
« on: February 22, 2015, 07:00:20 PM »
Hi,
I’m a new member here and want to introduce myself.
I started out selling firewood as a teenager to pay for college.
After that I spent several years logging, milling, and building log homes in Alaska.
Moved back to MA in 08.
Since moving back east I have managed to accumulate a Enercraft / Silva-Saw manual bandmill, a Lane #1 circle mill, and a Logmaster LM4 bandmill.

Here are some pictures of a log cabin that I built last summer.

Does anyone else here build log homes?

John B.

Welcome aboard.  Where did you live in AK?  I spent many years in Anchorage while in the Air Force.  I consider AK my home away from home!

Nice pics!  If we had the timber in this area I would build them!  We only have hardwood and its pretty expensive to build with in that capacity.

Hi Kirk,
I lived in Lime Village, about 15 miles from Sparrevohn Airforce Base.
Lime Village has a population of about 20 people, and is 190 miles from the nearest town big enough to have a store (McGrath 99627).

Hello John B
I am new here as well.
My two older boys moved from se AK back to Oregon recently.
We have a pair of sawmills.
My primary is a WM LT-70.
The other is the Cook's AC-36 high production package with edger.
I don't do much building just saw it and leave it.
We are a 100% portable operation serving all of the state of Oregon since 2006.
I have been around  sawmills as far back as I can remember ;D

Welcome to the forum Backwoods Sawyer.  Nice to see you here on the enlightened side instead of the dark side.

No loggers in the bunch, truck driver and vehicle modifier (still debating if that is a good thing or not)  ;)
The dark side turned the lights off on me a while back  :-\

John that is a well built cabin, a few decades ago I was lucky enough to spend a summer helping my grandfather mill out and build one similar up in north Idaho. Quite the project two story, full basement.

The house we built in se AK the first floor was all 4x4 stacked like interlocking logs, turned out to be a bit drafty so wrapped and sided it.

My plans are for a timber frame but I have a mile of road to build before I can even start that project. Getting an environmental impact study to cross a creek is a slow process.
