Looking for a planer, Grizzly ok?

So I have a Delta 12 1/2" bench top planer that has done me well for years, but, now that I bought my little mill I need more.. I found two so far.

 A Jet 16" open stand planer, the guy wants $850 but I've not been able to get him to respond.

Just today I located a Grizzly G1021, its older and "looks" ok. It has the cast iron in & out feed tables and a 3hp motor, and comes with a mobile base which I would need anyway. He is asking $450 and its about 3 hrs away... Whatcha think?

Grizzly stuff is OK I consider it advanced home owner, and the company is still active so good chance for parts. If its complete and runs well it seems like a fair deal. Frank C.

I know what you mean about the political correctness these days.  Most of it, if not all of it, is nothing more than 10 pounds of sewage stuffed into a 5 pound sack.  Many of these political activists have been caught receiving money and/or admitting to being paid by higher ups to sow divisiveness among the population.  I think you'll also notice none of these little political turds have jobs, either.  Imagine that - lazy, unemployed, self entitled, special feeling snowflakes screaming for socialism/communism so they can have their "gibs me dats" all the while screaming about how anyone opposed to their thoughts are nazis and fascists and need to die.  Do they realize Hitler and the Nazi party were...........socialist?  And that fascists are the ones who are intolerant of opposing views and resort to violence when opposed?  These horrible wastes of air don't seem to see just how hypocritical they are.  Amazing.

AO, the guys get off on a tangent, maybe I should have said home shop, semi professional and professional planers. Planers are a expensive high maintenance item that are a pain in the ass to adjust. The home depot types are fine for small stuff but are left wanting if much is to be done. Myself I have an old Parks cast iron planer 12", I drive with a tractor PTO. You will just have to keep your eyes open for good used or spend some bucks on a good new planer. A lot of cabinet shops have gone to the new style planers with the staggered teeth on the drum and will sell their old planers. Good luck mate one will come along. Frank C.

Thanks Frank.. I am in total agreement with what is being said above... but I am looking for some planer advice.  ;-)

I may still go have a look at that grizzly if its still available in a couple weeks, should help with the price if its not selling.

The Grizzly should be  a nice unit if not deteriorated too much.  I have one of the Woodmaster units that is a 4 in 1 type device.  Tradeoffs probably does nothing as well as a dedicated unit for each function but does a pretty good job overall for one piece of equipment that does so many different functions.

I've seen nice planers in Craigslist but it usually meant a real long day's worth of driving to get it.  And the better ones are usually pretty spot on for prices, never seem to be any bargains with them.  All the driving makes the total price shoot up even more so many times it's a deal breaker for me.

Do you have anything for trade?  Sometimes these sellers can be talked into trading, which helps to take some money off the final price.

I once traded an old arc welder that I never used anymore for $150 off a Power King/Economy tractor and attachments.  I don't do much buying these last few years (just fixing and maintaining a lot), but if I was, you can bet I'd be throwing some possible trades their way.

All of my planer shopping and thoughts are null now because my uncle gave me an old Rigid planer that he never used.  It's an older one, no longer made and no parts availability but it was free and so the price was right.  I had to rig up a raise/lower handle for it and get it free and moving again.  It was brand new but sat around in east Texas humidity for the last 20 years or so.  It works well enough for what it is and I never look a gift horse in the mouth.

The promised land is north central South Carolina, after finally escaping the horror which is colorado! I resided there for 7 incredibly long years! Notice I said resided, I did not consider it living!!  ;-)

I'm interested to know what you didn't like about Colorado.  I've heard as long as you stay out of the cities it's great and was under the impression it was one of the better states to live in, but that the liberals are trying like hell to change all the country folk around to living and thinking like they do and that perhaps it's becoming more liberal because of all the Kalifornia people coming around.

This is one of the reasons I've got my sights set firmly on the deep south (not TX, too many Californians and New Yorkers down there for my liking).  When's the last time you heard anything about moving to Alabama or Georgia or Mississippi or Louisiana?  I might even consider South Carolina.  Possibly Tennessee.

What I didn't like about colorado?  HaHa!! I do not have enough time to get into ALL of that!! I have lived all over this country, ILL,IND,OHIO,TEXAS,OKLAHOMA ,MISSOURI,SOUTH CAROLINA and resided in colorado, I would not consider it living in that state!


I'll hit on a couple points to start, but its pretty much pick a subject and colorado sucked at it.
  The weather.. horrific.. rained most every day, not enough to do any good like watering a garden or anything, just enough to get everything dirty! Oh, and probably the dirtiest place I've been good luck keeping you car clean. Speaking about the car, the road system is the worst I've seen, most of the side roads are gravel and the main roads while paved are of such disrepair its incredible. People there have NO clue how to drive, when I moved there I was averaging about 18,000 miles a year on my motorcycle, by the time I left it was about 3000 miles a year. Got to be more of an annoyance than an enjoyable thing to do!

Want me to continue?? EVERYTHING there is overpriced! Food, land , housing whatever... they think they are special so they jack the prices for no reason!! I had a house on 10 acres, it was almost twice expensive as this house and 100 acres. this has all useable property with ponds springs river, that one was on a side of a hill with almost NO useable property!

The people for the most part were uppity and thought they were special for being there, there favorite line was "oh, I'm a native" my response was always, "sorry to hear that" they'd been there all there life and knew nothing else.

Thats it, I'm tired of typing, but you get the idea.. If I never step in that state or see snow again I'll die happy.. uh oh.. speaking of snow... I had snow anywhere from September to May and anywhere in-between! Just as you get to March I', thinking springtime... and we get hit with another 2-3 foot deep storm!

I hate colorado probably more than anything else on this planet, except maybe the left!

Texas is great, just stay away from Austin, great city to visit (I'll be going at thanksgiving to visit my daughter) And I like running around that town, just dont live there! Any of those other states you listed would be fine I'm thinking, although I wouldn't want to live on the coast due to the hurricane threat. I'm about 130 miles from the coast and it seems by the time they get that far inland they've lost their kick. Now I'm only going by 4 years experience being here and I suppose we'll get some damage sometime but I cant attest to that from experience!

Thanks for the reply, A.O., I appreciate it.  It sounds to me like Colorado is like much of the citified areas around here.  People have a hoity-toity attitude, and for what?  Beats me.  This place sucks.

Are you worried about the constant influx of people from Kalifornia and NY and such flooding into Texas?  I know it's a big state, but.........

Texas has always appealed to me but it seems that real estate is quite pricey compared to surrounding states.  That, and the fact that it worries me about the flooding in of city types from the afore-mentioned states.

I figured that if I chose a state that you hardly ever hear about it would suit us just fine.  My wife has a background in CNC machining and is currently in an apprenticeship for tool maker.  She also has managing background in retail and with horses.  I reckon finding a decent job for her just about anywhere is do-able.  I'm a government funded cripple so don't have to worry about finding a "job" but I'm busy as hell just keeping this place alive what with all the constant repairs and new building and sawmilling.  I generally can't get in an 8 hour day anymore because of the pain and energy factors, but it ain't for lack of trying.

It's funny you mention gun laws.  It's actually one of the main reasons, among many, that we want to move.  What do you do against a governor who passes a gun law at 12:01 AM without public perusal OR acceptance and then nothing is done about it afterward?  It's an illegal law which is ignored by millions.  But once in a while I read about some poor (and admittedly dumb) bastard who gets a class E felony slapped on him for possessing a magazine with higher than 10 rounds capacity (dumb because he wasn't counting his shots and pausing in between 7 shots fired).  Class E felony is what child molesters are commonly given.  It's nowhere close to the same thing.  Andrew Cuomo needs to just go and die in whatever way he thinks is best because he's a traitor and a liar and a thief and doesn't give two shits about us poor upstate NY folk.  And yet he stays in power because NYC apparently loves him and they outnumber us upstaters by a lot and so votes from us don't count.

After seeing what's happened in this world in the last 10 years or so I'm actively suggesting to our 2 kids to seriously consider not having children.  I wouldn't want to bring a baby into this garbage.  At least not until a whole bunch is fixed.  Maybe a double Trump administration can change something but I doubt it.  There are very powerful and wealthy powers that be that want the U.S.A. destroyed.  *sigh*

Ha, that was the straw that broke the camels back for me also, when the puppet governor of uglyrado started signing unconstitutional laws into effect, we were gone shortly there after! Two main prerequisites were no or almost no snow, and a RED state, would not even consider looking at any others!

  And I do not know how they get away with installing illegal laws but they do! Hopefully Mr Trump will change all that!!
