Wood Storage Project
« on: January 23, 2022, 09:40:57 PM »
Last year I started collecting Douglas Fir poles to use on the building I was going to build on the foundation of what was a 100 plus-year-old chicken barn.  The old barn was missing metal and falling apart and what wood I did have in it was getting wet so it was time to start replacing it.

There will be a ton of photos of this project so give me some time.

This is the east-end foundation after the old barn was removed.

All the cracked portions were removed while prepping for repair.

Let the cutting begin!

With no firm dimension plans for the building at that time I cut the widest 2x material I could and dead stacked it all with the plan to sort out the best stuff and cut to size when I was ready for the next phase, building!

This was the beginning of the hardwood collection to use for the main posts.  I got all this for free!

These were the full length of the trailer, 36'+  Walnut, Ash, Red Oak, and a few cherry

Free Logs!  All the Ash was used to cut my posts for the building.  The red oak was used for the 1x4's to secure the metal to.  The Walnut is going to be for some specialty stuff for future projects.  There was at least 2000 bf of walnut in that load.

Tearing down the old was probably the hardest part of this entire job.  For the record, outside some help on the foundation work, I did this entire project by myself, with the exception of a few sheets of siding and a couple runs of metal on the roof.

Tool of choice for tearing down a building that is full of stacked lumber?  Milwaukee Sawzall!  The entire building was torn apart piece by piece with that one power tool and assistance with a prybar and hammer.

Had to remove the entire old north wall to get the foundation work done last year.  The old footings were cracked and leaning out from water leaking in and freezing and pushing it out.  Parts of that old foundation that we cut out were leaning about 30 degrees.  Did all this work in two days.

I propped up the old roof with posts and basically cut out the walls from under it so we could do the foundation work on the rest of the north side.

With the foundation work completed, it was time to start building walls.

This project was done in stages over the last 2 years.  I did the foundation work in about three days in late September.  In my spare time I was cutting 10' 2x4's out of the douglas fir and 4x4's out of the Ash for the posts.  I built it on 2-foot centers with posts just shy of every 8 feet.

This was the first wall.  Behind that wall you can still see the remaining 30 feet of a building that had to be torn down.

I worked on this a few hours a day during October-December.  Maybe three days a week.   I paced myself so that I could complete the first 70 feet before the end of the year, with plans on doing the last 30 feet the following year, which was done in 2021.  The entire building is 100x39, with an interesting discovery on the last sheet of roofing which I will explain when I get to that point in the pictures.

Wall building continues.

Turns out, I was only able to lift and place about a 12-foot wall at a time.  I did do one 15 foot section and it kicked my back side.

Now the fun part?  Working by myself I had to get creative when it comes to putting up trusses almost 8 feet apart.

After several cups of coffee and a lot of praying and brainstorming, it hit me.

Build them in sets of two on the ground!  It's a whole lot easier to put the purlins in when you standing on the ground!

Having the sets built and ready to install saved a lot of time.  I put up 4 sets in one day by myself.

This photo gives a good perspective of the old vs the new.  The old chicken barn side walls were 6 feet high with rafters.  I went 10' walls with trusses.

Excellent pics and walkthrough!  And what a great idea for setting trusses!  I enjoy seeing pics of other folks' projects.  Looks real good.

Did I mention I did ALL of this construction work by myself?  Looking back on this I cant believe I actually got it done. Should have done this when my son was still home?  LOL
