I did just that, Andy, until I was 24 years old, I was "cowboy". I then decided on another dream of teaching. I tought for 30 years and went to another dream sawmilling, timber land management and logging. What a blast it has been.
Hey Andy, I am planing to build a 12' X 16' miniture logcabin in the woods behind my house this summer. Just a little cottage like deal, no running water but there will be electric. Gonna see how I do with timberframing and building with logs. I can't wait. I wanna make it big enough that my Mom & Dad can stay in it, just so they don't feel like they are cramping my style when they come. May go 15' X 20' Yanevaknow

May go 15' X 20' Yanevaknow How can anyone that has a mill not build a timber frame structure? Might just be me but thats what got me to mills. I wanted to do timber framing first...then the mill idea came to me. To me thats the ultimate building project. Can't get much more organic than that...unless yer building an igloo...lol.The whole timber frame design fascinates me. How simple they are but when they're done how incredablably beautiful they look. No matter what size they are.Ya know theres a school in Franklin ...not all that far from you. Pretty cheap actually and not far from you. You might wanna consider it. It'd give you a nice jump on things. http://www.timberframemag.com/workshops.html
Andy, are you saying you dont have a button to modify your post? Permissions are set so that everyone can modify there post?
Hey Andy & All, I have always liked timber frame homes but never figured I'd have the ability to build one. I'm gonna build this small one to see if I really want to spend the rest of my life building one like I want to live in. This is a very time consuming project. I need all the hand tools necessary for this kind of work. Any pointers would be great.
I was fortunate enough to get all of my Great Grandfathers timber frame tools and the wooden tool box that he kept them in. He built at leat 10 of the local Timber Frame barns in the area. The one at the family farm by brother purchased was built in 1886 and is solid as a rock!
