I did just that, Andy, until I was 24 years old, I was  "cowboy".  I then decided on another dream of teaching.  I tought for 30 years and went to another dream sawmilling, timber land management and logging.  What a blast it has been. ;D

;D Thats right better live'm while ya can. When I was a kid my Dad was a crane operator. As long as I can remember, all I wanted to be was a crane operator. I have done that for the last 30 years. I don't have any Idea where this desire to run a sawmill comes from, I really do think the desire is from God, so I would have a life to replace the one I was giving up for Christ. I still run the cranes but I'm doing all I can think to do, to change into the new life of a fulltime sawyer.

OK try #2. Pictures didn't work and my entire post got deleted...ugh.
This is to WB being youre such a good Christian.
I'm a self proclaimed HinJew but I've been to this place dozens of times since I was a teenager.
Its up top Meads Mountain in Woodstock NY.
I lived there many years ago ...wayyyy before the concert.
Here's an assignment for your dream catcher WB.....build sumpin' like whats in the link I'm gonna post. I'll even help ya if I ever get down to NC on some property.
One side can be my meditation room and the other side can be yer church.

I've actually always built a meditation room in every house I ever owned/built.
Tried posting the one in this house which was how my original post disappeared.
Sumpin' in the air I reckon ::)

And oddly enough this Tibetan Buddhist Monastery was built just a cpl a hundred feet from it awhile ago. I used to stop in as they were building it.
Pretty sacred mountain top now I'd have to say

;D Hey Andy, I am planing to build a 12' X 16' miniture logcabin in the woods behind my house this summer. Just a little cottage like deal, no running water but there will be electric. Gonna see how I do with timberframing and building with logs. I can't wait. I wanna make it big enough that my Mom & Dad can stay in it, just so they don't feel like they are cramping my style when they come. May go 15' X 20' Yanevaknow  ;D
Thanks The WoodButcher

How can anyone that has a mill not build a timber frame structure? Might just be me but thats what got me to mills. I wanted to do timber framing first...then the mill idea came to me. To me thats the ultimate building project. Can't get much more organic than that...unless yer building an igloo...lol.
The whole timber frame design fascinates me. How simple they are but when they're done how incredablably beautiful they look. No matter what size they are.
Ya know theres a school in Franklin ...not all that far from you. Pretty cheap actually and not far from you. You might wanna consider it. It'd give you a nice jump on things.

Its there now. I had a feeling it would appear again which was why I didn't ask you to check into it. I think my puter is looney. Thing is....these issues seem to just happen here. Maybe once I sell my house and buy a mill the website will be more accepting of me....lol

 Hey Andy & All, I have always liked timber frame homes but never figured I'd have the ability to build one. I'm gonna build this small one to see if I really want to spend the rest of my life building one like I want to live in. This is a very time consuming project. I need all the hand tools necessary for this kind of work. Any pointers would be great.  ::)
Thanks The WoodButcher

I've recently read a few books to learn how to deal with them. So far this is my favorite book. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1561581291
The photos are really nice. great diagrams explaining everything and it's detailed but not over my head.

You're also gonna need a few basic tools...one being probably the most important....a 1 1/2" in framers chisel. they go for about $100+ new. I've got them on my watch list on Ebay but until I move and I'm actually ready I'm not prepared to spend the money unless I see a steal.
If I were you I'd take that class I gave you the link to.

I was fortunate enough to get all of my Great Grandfathers timber frame tools and the wooden tool box that he kept them in.  He built at leat 10 of the local Timber Frame barns in the area. The one at the family farm by brother purchased was built in 1886 and is solid as a rock!
