Whimsical magazine rack
« on: June 03, 2009, 06:47:25 PM »
I decided I would post this here, since I come here often, but don't have much to offer in the milling department. As of late, I have had way too much on my mind and I needed a break from life so I decided to build something that would be a challenge, but also be fun. This is what I came up with. It's a magazine rack that looks like it should have arms coming out of the side, and eyes that are staring at you. The dovetails are handcut, and the finish is boiled linseed oil with a few coats of beeswax. I used tiger maple and african mahogany scraps that were laying around to build it.

Wow!  Julian, those are beautiful.  I sure like that Tiger Maple on the one container.  Your finish is great as well.  Very unique design in the legs.

I couldn't leave well enough alone today. I ended up taking off the wax and adding a few coats of amber shellac, then waxed it again. It will hold up to the humid bathroom a bit better now, and it has a bit deeper color. Here's some better pics that I took outside today.

Your decision to redo the containers was a good one.

That is VERY nice. That African Mahogany sides, looks just about like our Spanish Cedar.
