Big'uns
« on: October 05, 2009, 08:27:54 AM »
:o We bit off a mouth full with this one. I can't imagine how some of you folks with manual mills do this with out the help of heavy equipment. I wouldn't even attempt this if I did'nt have the overhead hoist. I love the big logs as long as they don't expect them to be done in 15 or 20 minutes.

A little trim work :)

Gettin closer, this is some pretty wood.

More pix coming most of the ones that we took yesterday got trashed.
Thanks The WoodButcher

A broad hewing axe would have made cleaner side cuts. Would have also made the eperience long lasting and enjoyable.

Nothing a Lucas couldn't handle.  It does get as little tricky when they're really big, say 65", but still doable.  They do make a bigger frame, but none that I know of in the USA.

:P Well dang seems as though every forum I go to any more the people just wanna tear down your work no matter how you do it or what your doing it with. And everybody always wants to point out that they have a better piece of equipment than I'm using. This is the third forum I've posted this in and the third forum I've been belittled and talked to like an idiot. If trimming this log down with a broad hewing axe is EZ'r than with a chainsaw then maybe you should come show me something. I didn't post this to compare mills, methods or anything else. Also, If I had a Lucas mill thats probably what I would have used. But I don't. I just thought I'd contribute a little to the forums, had no idea I'd be belittled on this forum like I was on the others. but it won't happen again. I'll leave it all up to you Big timers. I wasn't trying to make a post that couldn't be matched. I was just showing my little mill with a mouthfull. some of You big timers better stay away from sharp objects,.... your liable to punch a hole in that big head and let all the air out.  ;D

Sorry if I am misunderstanding your intended remarks but I really don't see any body posting anything positive,....... just derogitory. Forgive me if I am wrong about this as well. I seem to the "wrongest" person I know anymore.

Take a chill pill WB!

I know for myself I was only making a point on the catilevers advantage on such logs and in no way meant to belittle you and I dont see anything in any post where your being talked to like an idiot.

No one here is claiming to be a big timer in this business so are we to interprit that to be a sarcastic jab?  I am only going to assume other things going on with your life this week have you on the touchy side as your post does not reflect the WB I thought I knew from other posts.

Take a seat and think about what you posted.  Three forums and they all did the same thing.  Maybe there is a message in consistancy?  Not sure what it might be but if you are hearing the same thing on the same topic from entirely different groupls of people I suspect it has some meaning.

Instead of taking it as a personal attack why not turn it into a positive.

I know if I let Franks comments about what he can cut compared to my little band mill bother me I would be in the nut house :D

The fact is, the posts had nothing at all peronal.

Stephen's post was rather comical.  I am sure his suggestion was accurate but I am guessing you missed the humor in the fact that the reason it would be a long lasting experience is because it would have taken a LOT more work.

I know several guys that had great success with Lumber mate mills and everyone of them got to a point where those big logs were out numbering the small ones and they stepped up to a bigger mill with more capabililties and guess what, they look back on it and laugh about the things they had to do to logs to get them through the post.

Again, take a chill pill and if I didnt mention it, great looking log!

You know, WB, I ment nothing at all, on the negative side of your concern.  I must commend you for taking on such a task.  I too have had to trim logs with a chainsaw, before I can saw them on my mill.  Many times I have even had to quarter them with a chainsaw, before I can even move them onto the mill.  Each time I say, "Never again, will I quarter a log with a chainsaw."  Guess what, I have found myself more times than not, doing just that.  The eleven foot diameter Sequoia is still laying in the same spot I had it place.  I may have waited long enough, as I have a fella that want a ten foot section to carve two bull elk in locked horns.  No quartering for that section, anyway.
Again, I ment no disrespect toward yourself, your mill or the trimming you were doing to make lumber.

Yes I kinda went off on you guys and I am sorry for that. I just had a bad day I recon. Forgive me if you would. I had just gone to another forum and it was unreal how they did all they could do to belittle me and my mill and anything else they could pick apart of my operation. These folks give sawyers a real bad name in my book. They might be good at there work, but they are the most unfriendly people I have ever had any dealings with. Here is a link to that site but beware they are very hard to get along with if you don't kiss much butt.

A forum is a place to learn and discuss what we do, and what others do...worrying about opinions of nameless people from the internet is not something I would get in a twist over. This forum may be small, but rest easy, you are among some very knowledgeable and friendly guys...you want to see brutality, just look at Contractor Talk....

Meanwhile, like Kirk said, nice logs....I wish I was doing what you are doing...my mill has not been started in well over a year.

No problem, hope you enjoy the handiness all the more with your chainsaw on the big ones; opposed to hand hewing with a broad ax.  ;)

Some of us do not even have a mill. Thus, we enjoy the pics and the opportunity the rest of you share on this forum.

Like I said I am sorry, I just let them folks lick the red off of my candy and it was wrong of me to come here and take it out on you guys. Shouldn't let that happen I know. Thank You that you seem to understand. Sometimes this mess will get the better of you ;D

Heard stories but never seen a picture to date. Maybe my camera is one thing I own that is better than yours. Not to mention I have the know how to post them once the pictures are taken.  ;D ;D

WB,
It's people like you that make me want to own a band mill.
My Lucas is great but it won't do what a band mill will.  Meant no slight to whittling on the log.   Wish I had a few more hardwood logs like that one.

I bought the Lucas to cut big logs but it's a lot of work.  Many times wish I had a band mill to be able to cut wider boards or smaller logs without so much waste.
Looking back is seems we started playing, "Mines bigger than yours"  I'm willing to concede to Franks 11' piece of yard art that he keeps showing off to all the tourist.  Way bigger than my 6' piece of play ground equipment that my grand kids love to climb on.

Peace brother.
