Should i or not..
« on: January 18, 2010, 08:43:49 PM »
Talked to a guy that bought a christmas tree farm and wants to cut all the big tree down. Wants to plant more new little trees.
I just contacted him and have not seen the trees.
They range from 9" and up but i would take onyl 12" and up.
I would have to get the logs trucked but it might be worth if there is alot.
I dont know just need some help.
Ask on the FF(dont yell at me) and was told to forget it.
So what do yoiu all think.

Thanks Alot Mr Mom

No one had better say a thing about anyone asking anything anywhere.  The whole concept of the internet is information gathering.  A few of us may want nothing to do with the owner of that site and a few of this loyal fund raisers but that doesnt mean there arent good people and good ideas there.  My only caution would be in relation to any business transactions with the owner!

Is he wanting to have you cut them into lumber or does he just want to get rid of them?  If he is going to simply get rid of them I would jump all over it.  If its for lumber I would try to do it on shares on the big stuff and charge him on the smaller logs.

I personaly never pass up a free log!

If its for construction dont cut yourself short on the 9" stuff.  Lots of good 2x6 material can come from that!

I would think the type of mill you have would depend on using those logs.

If you have a band mill, go for it.

Any chance of taking the mill TO the logs ???

HaroldCR...Yes bandmill.
As for moving the mill might be the thing to do. Need to buy a truck first.
Would you like to come to Northeast Ohio and help me shovel the 2' of snow out of the way.
Going to call him this week.
Thanks Alot Mr Mom

RENT a Pickup, or whatever you need, to get the mill to the logs.

As you mill, try to sell some lumber, to recover the rental fees.

Have you put the mill on an axle ???  If not, have you started building a trailer, for the mill ???

These things have very little cost. Snow is a non-issue.

Get the trees cut and de-limbed. Get them to a good staging area to saw. By then, snow will be melting.

I grew up in snow. Worked outside my entire life. ICE is bad. Snow is a non-issue, as I said.

Talked to the guy tonight and here is the deal

The land was his grandads he planted alot of x-mas tree before he passed.
The last time he planted was in 83 when he passed.Nobody did anything with the trees for the last 20 years.
he said that there is going to be a lot of trees that have to come out over crowded and he is having a forester come over next month to help him manage the trees.
He is thinning the place to so there is going to be more logs.
The good part it is all free to take :o :o :o.
now need to make a plan.
Said that he has about 30 trees down already.
Thanks Alot Mr Mom

Who gets to de-limb them ???  They will be brushy like Upland Cedar. Lots of work there. If it was me, I would work to get them de-limbed, and use 2-3 smaller ones on the ground, then put all I could up on those, to keep them from sticking to the dirt and also, to make it easier to roll them onto the mill.

Set a GOOD site for sawing, and put the logs there. This time of year, bugs won't be a problem, as well as Blue Stain (Denim Pine).

Doing this now, gets you way down the road, when sawing time comes.

Do you have room at your place to stack logs ???  Every time I made a trip, I would try to carry some logs back to my place, "just in case " .  You never know when the situation could change.  I would also offer up some lumber as a thank you, or offer to help the guy a little. Never know who he will talk to, and, good will is very contagious. You might need to upgrade to a better mill in a year or so, IF you play your cards right.

I've had trouble fitting in down here, because of the language barrier. Slowly but surely, I'm getting more work than I ever wanted, all because I treated people well, even though they had trouble understanding me.

YOU CAN DO IT.  8) 8) 8)  Good Luck

I will offer to help him to cut and limb when i see the trees next week.
As for the newer mill i will try to work on the wife. Looking for maybe a small portable mill.

 Not even hardly, Kirk. ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

  Mr. Mom
I would think it wood behoove YOU to be sure to talk with the guy about LOCATION and set up, if you can saw at his location. Otherwise, you might find piles of logs, and needing trimmed to get them on the mill.

Don't know how many or what you have already sawn, so, I'm just offering things for you to think about. IF the guy only wants trees moved, he won't care how it's piled. Next thing, he's PO'ed because YOU didn't follow through. THAT word will get around, and, you will have a LOOONG uphill battle, trying to secure logs in the future.

Dealing with people takes a LOT of intestinal fortitude. BE PREPARED. If the situation doesn't look like you can handle it, GRACIOUSLY bow out, or, at least try to work a deal for SOME logs, and take them home.

DO NOT be the bad guy. It doesn't pay.  ::) ::) ;D ;D

HaroldCR...I listen to all you have said and will learn form them.
When i was growing up my dad said to listen to people and learn from there wise words.
I have two choice haul the logs or move the mill.Have to see his place to witch way to go.
What does behoove mean?? New to me.
I have started nothing yet. Deal is still in the works.
He said that he would not let a logger in his place because he has seen how they work around his area. I Guess not good.
I am going to go though with it come hell or high water. I never back out of a deal. Some have cost me more money than i could have made. learning curve.
He is doing all the removing. He has his plan.
This is still in the talking stage.
You keep talking and i will keep listening.
  Thank you.

Thanks Alto Mr Mom

Sounds like Harold's got you on the right track.

I'd guess any knots will be small and tight.  Not a problem for construction wood, but lots of pitch.  Cutting should be pretty straight forward because the trees will be nearly all the same size.  Lots of pitch.  Might want to have a spray bottle of something (diesel. simple green?) for the saw blade to keep the pitch build up down.

Snow keeps the mud off.

I'd get the longest bar that my chainsaw would handle so you'd have more reach.  Cutting Christmas trees is a back killer.  Somewhere near the trees is a "landing site" where they'd process the trees for shipment and it should be fairly flat.  Good place to saw if you go on site.  Also a good place to stack the peelings and burn them.

As stated though--------------- LOTS OF WORK.

Sounds like a good find.  Good luck
