Looking for some unique wood
« on: July 22, 2010, 08:18:59 AM »
Not sure if this topic should be here, or possibly somewhere else...so if it doesn't fit, feel free to move.

The Christmas holidays usually gets me some really nice orders for pens and other turning projects(but it's pretty much pens that drive my sales through to the "Black Ink".  So what I'm looking for?  Unique slabs, crotch, burl, or even crotchy-burl.  The slabs do not need to be big!  Something that would fit into a Large Flat Rate Postal Box would be perfect.... 12"L x 12"W x 5-1/2"H

I perfer anything that is tight grained.  I can get the slabs to size here, so a solid slab would be great.  Big knots and pith = not good.  Small knots = okay.  Bug holes = not good, unless the holes still have some pooh in 'em.

So if your walking around your mill area and see a slab that was tossed aside...get me a photo, and we'll go from there!

All these 'views' and no one has seen anything laying on the ground that you "might" think is useless?

Not sure if some of you know this or not, but a good burl, crotch piece is probably worth more then the rest of the tree in the right market.......

What kind of burls do you normally see?
As I would be using this for myself and one friend here locally, I'm not sure if I'd need something in the +50lb range(it would last me a really long time).  Do you see anything in that size(less then 50lb)??

I could PM you my phone number(rather not have it on the open forum), or you could PM me yours and I could call you from time-to-time to see what you have available?

Most of the burl I get in, is Western Big Leaf Maple burl, in all kinds of shapes and sizes.

Might have a shot at some Avocado. It had branches big enough to make sawlogs, for our uses.

Also, have a shot at a huge Mango. It has BIG branches for sawlogs. Hope to take it down in pieces, so the branches don't shatter at the "$$" areas.  Stay tuned.  ;D

Jusst for grins and giggles I cut up a piece of dog wood limb on my band saw that I had pruned off my flowering dog wood.  Pretty wood, almost pure white and very hard to see the growth rings, but the branch was so small not much to do anything with.  And lots of cup as it dried.  No, you can't have the tree.

Please don't cut down the trees providing shade in your yard :o

The only experience I've had with Dogwood, was some ols spalted stuff I had in the campfire wood pile that I rescued from a future camping trip.  Didn't turn all that great with a lot of tear out, but when I finally got it finished up...wasn't all that bad.  Some guys that I associate with won't turn a limb, saying that the grain has been under stress and will do as you saw, and 'cup'.  Don't know as I haven't done that......yet.
Going to try and turn a piece of that Garry Oak stuff this morning after the wife gets up....so I'll let you know something by noon-ish.

Looked through some old posts and saw a chunk of those Western Big Leaf Burls Frank was talking about, tell you the truth....couldn't get to sleep last night thinking about those!  Awesome stuff!!!!

Mango and Avocado sounds interesting....absolutely know of noone turning that stuff.  I might need to research as to why?

Thanks for looking around guys, just let me know.

Got the OK to get the Avocado. Have to wander down there and see what is left. After 3½ days of chainsawing, I imagine they cut everything I wanted into small pieces ::) ::)

makes it tougher to saw on the Peterson  ::) ::)

Trunk is still in 1 piece. Don't know how I will get that up the hill, yet >>  Could get interesting, without a boom or arch to get it off the ground.

Stay tuned for updates.  ;D ;D

Frank, don't know when I'll have time but I'll alert my inlaws about the need for burls and we'll see what they can find.  My needs aren't high on their priority but then as loggers they aren't real busy right now.  Got a nephew that's a real go getter and he knows half the country.  If I can get him stirred up we might get some results and they aren't too far from you.

Do just stumps qualify?

Beats me ???  I use the same technique on here as I do on other sites. Nothing posted. No words ?? No photos ??  I refreshed the page and punched the post button and got an error message that said, "You already posted this message", or something very similar ???

Photos got sent to SDB by yahoo mail ???  This site says 40K size file limit ?? My photos are 450 pixels AT the largest measurement ??

Do I need to optimize here ??

 Inquiring minds want to know.  ::) ::) ::) ;D

Edit:  Got 1 photo into the Gallery, then, nothing. never did find a "Bulk" upload button ???

Post 7 in this thread had the gallery instructions.
http://www.sawmillandtimberforum.com/index.php/topic,58.0.html

The pic size refers to space it takes on the hard drive.  I have several pics that are 450 pixels square but they are only 30K in size so they upload fairly fast.

Once your in your gallery there is a button at the bottom for bulk upload.  (5 at a time)

I was stumbling around in the creek area, yesterday, and had to cut a small 3". dia log out of my way.  ::) ::)

Wait till y'all see THIS thing. I thought it had a good chance to be Poisonous, so, took my resident Tica down to look at it, this morning. She has NO idea what it is.

It is SNOW White, with AHHHHHHH, ya gotta SEE it. Ennyhoo, I cut a section about a foot long, and stuck it with the machete to carry it. It has a gazillion tiny black thorns on it. Even INSIDE , the white wood has black spots, and, you can feel the spines in there, also.

It starts turning orange with red specks after an hour, so, I will whack off a little of one end and then show photos tomorrow, Sunday, of both ends.

I need some ARTISTIC minds, to help me market this thing. Probably never find another like it, ever.  ::) ::) ;D

Been wondering about ya down there....
Two big storms floating through. Earl and the next one.

The wood is white with black spots when first cut, but turns orange with red spots....sounds a little freaky.  Saw some wood similiar to what your describing on IAP a while ago, but I can't find it now.  I recall the price in the area of $12/blank that was 3/4sq x 5-1/4" plus shipping.

We don't get storms. Just some mild wind and LOTS of rain. Thunderstorms, now, that's a different thing. We get some fierce ones of those.

In about a couple hours, when the sun gets up, I will take the camera and get some shots of this wood. I really can't explain it. Not too sure it will make blanks.  ::) ::)

Needs to be used on round projects, about 3" in dia.. maybe ???

I made the photos pretty big and sent to 3 people. I'm way too busy to spend time with reducing them.

I can email them to someone if they want to see, or even reduce them and post here.
