New saw for me
« on: April 17, 2011, 08:07:08 PM »
WOOHOO!!!

Just acquired a slightly used Stihl 064!
Ordered a 36" and two coils of ripping chain for her!

Ah, the wide slabs to be ripped are just begging me to get them out of the woods......

Guess it's time to put that POS Homelite UT10519 saw on eBay or something?  Sure don't need it sitting next to those Stihl's...giving the lazy ideas of not running after the first tank of fuel mix.....

Unless someone knows why the saw won't start after running 3/4 tank of fuel?

Starts cold....few pulls.
Stop saw to re-fill gas/oil after cutting about 3/4 tank....doesn't re-start.
Let saw cool to ambient temps....starts with 4-6 pulls.

Any ideas?  Was think the the wiring gets hot and opens a circuit somewhere, but I can't find anything.  So I thought, let the saw idle for a short time before shutting down to re-fill(let it pull it some cool air), didn't work.  So then I thought, hmmm....fuel mix is supposed to be 40:1......mixed some new at 35:1(thinking it was running to lean to make enough power to spin the chain)....didn't work(but it runs smoother).

Check to see if it has blue spark next time it won't start.  Change the spark plug.  Probably not the problem but a cheap way to eliminate a possible problem.

Next would be the "points" which should be some sort of electronics under the fly wheel.  Many electronics have a built in temp shut down.  Make sure the air passages are clear on the flywheel so air can move.

I've got the same problem on my old Mac but it's 30 years old and I understand not wanting to start.  If it gets too bad it's an excuse to buy a new one.

My (30+) year old STIHL 041, gets hard to start after shutting down. I think it boils out the crappy gasoline in the carb.

Starts SECOND pull cold, and 4th or 5th pull when hot. Been like that for all 30+ years, KIRK.  ::) ;D ;D

It;s difficult getting all the oily sawdust cleaned off the engine, so, it does radiate heat after a full tank session, poor old girl.  ;D ;D ;D :D :D :D

my 064 did that. slowly got worse, i replaced the coil & she worked good after that, heat & old coils not good . check spark when hot
or you might have the gas problem mentioned take a mustard bottle of fuel mix & dribble a little in when no start & see if its starving
i thought stihl invented the portable chain saw !!!!!!!! kirk what likes to be funny

I just replaced the electronical ignition module in mine. Got to where it had no spark.  ::) ::)

Ordered it in from North Carolina.

Also have a new condition. When it gets hard starting (4-5 pulls), I take the top off the carb and clean the sawdust mud out of the tiny filter screen ?????????  Have done it 7-8 times, and, it STILL gets that mud in there ?????????????  Never had that before changing that module ??????????

I've heard that sawdust gets in yer blood, but, but ?????????????????????????
